BACKGROUND CHECK

PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DESCRIPTION
A Mechanical Maintenance Technician Supervisor I schedules, coordinates and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical components such as boilers, filters, pumps, compressors and hydraulic and pneumatic valves in a water or wastewater treatment plant or pumping station. Work of this class involves supervising mechanical maintenance personnel.
Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies. Work is performed in a water or wastewater treatment plant or pumping station where there may be occasional exposure to chemicals, dust and fumes, extremes of heat and cold, noxious odors and moving equipment. Work requires moderate physical exertion.
SELECTION PROCESS All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have five years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work including one year of experience in assigning, reviewing and approving the work of others.

NOTE EQUVALENCIES: Have six months of additional experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement. Completion of one year of the required coursework in a power mechanic or machine shop curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of complex mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and procedures pertaining to mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Supervisory ability.
  • Ability to plan work procedures.
  • Ability to detect and analyze defects in mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to perform and evaluate complex qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests and research in the area of DNA analysis and identification.
  • Ability to write and/or assist in writing grants to further the technological advancement of the laboratory unit.
  • Ability to perform and evaluate research projects.
  • Ability to assign, review and correct the work of subordinate DNA analyst staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
