All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a CHOOSE A TERM mandatory probation.
POSITION OVERVIEW
A Sanitation Enforcement Worker inspects residential and commercial properties in Baltimore City to enforce various City Codes and Ordinances, including health, housing, sanitation, building, fire, and related codes. This role is focused on ensuring proper sanitation and sanitary maintenance of properties in both residential and non-residential areas. The work involves identifying violations, issuing citations, and referring violations to other city agencies when necessary. Employees in this class do not have supervisory responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week. Work is performed in various City neighborhoods where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, dogs, rodents, insects and deteriorating structures may be encountered. The work involves continuous standing and walking.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies responsible parties, records and reports unsanitary conditions such as trash, rats, high grass and weeds and such housing code violations.
- Issues Environmental Citations utilizing a computerized system to property owners, landlords or tenants for specific sanitation violations based on the relevant City Codes.
- Identifies conditions warranting the attention of other City agencies and makes appropriate referrals.
- Investigates complaints of improper disposal of residential and non-residential trash and other sanitation related violations.
- Prepares and maintains inspection records and reports utilizing the computer, proprietary business software and other common business software packages,
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to learn Baltimore City building, housing, health and related codes pertaining to the code requirements for unimproved lots and alleys and the exteriors of residential and non-residential properties.
- Ability to inspect property and determine code violations.
- Ability to deal effectively with property owners, tenants and the general public.
- Ability to utilize the computer, proprietary business software and other common business software packages to prepare clear and concise reports and to maintain appropriate records.
