BACKGROUND CHECK:

PROBATION:
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY:
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION:
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
A Horticultural Assistant performs indoor and outdoor horticultural work in greenhouses including conservatories, landscapes, parks and gardens for municipal displays. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek that may include night and weekend work. Work is performed in, gardens, greenhouses and city landscapes where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and insects may be encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion in the lifting and moving of large plants, mulch, soil and fertilizers, installation of gardens and the arranging of displays.

Minimum Qualifications
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have two years of experience in the propagation and growing of plants, trees and shrubs in a commercial nursery, greenhouse or landscape operation.
OR
EQUIVALENCIES: Completion of an apprenticeship program in the propagation and growing of plants may be substituted for the education and experience requirement or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:
Have a valid Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.

- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of various plants through cuttings, seeds or division.

- Knowledge of greenhouse culture and climate control.
