BACKGROUND CHECK

PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
Position Overview
The Baltimore City Health Department seeks a Suicide Prevention Coordinator for its Office of Youth and Trauma Services to guide, analyze and propose modifications and improvements in crisis intervention and behavioral health programs focused on the prevention of youth and community suicides. This position collaborates with system partners to support behavioral health system management and work to prevent suicides and mental health crises.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office where working conditions are normal. Work requires minimal physical exertion.The Suicide Prevention Coordinator reports directly to the Director of the Office of Youth and Trauma Services and plays a critical role in engaging youth, families, youth serving organizations and programs to support implementation strategies focused on preventing suicides. Position is under Aisha Burgess, Director, Aisha.Burgess@baltimorecity.gov
Essential Functions
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in social work, Behavioral Health, or Public Health from an accredited college or university.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Four years of experience in providing interventions and supports to those in crisis. Preferred candidate has experience responding to individuals with mental health challenges or a propensity for self-directed violence.
OR
EQUIVENCY NOTE: Have an equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

Essential Functions
- Outreach to community organizations, groups and agencies to inform them about available resources regarding suicide prevention.
- Coordination and training regarding the relationship between trauma and suicide as needed
- Working with partners on public awareness and prevention strategies
- Collaborating with the Health Department’s Child Fatality Review Team and the Maternal Mortality Review Team to develop and implement prevention plans.
- Collaborating with emergency departments, pediatricians, primary care physicians, the Baltimore City Public School System, colleges and universities to encourage screening for suicidality and to help establish continuity of care for patients at risk of suicide.
- Using data to determine trends regarding suicides and suicide attempts to the extent such information is available.
- Working as part of a task force to develop a plan of action to reduce suicides in Baltimore City
- Representing the health department in interagency meetings and committees. Fulfilling other related duties as assigned by the Director.
