The City of Banning is seeking qualified candidates to fill vacancies for a Police Officer Position. 

JOB DEFINITION: Under general supervision from first line supervisors, incumbent performs law enforcement and crime prevention work; controls traffic flow and enforces State and local traffic regulations; performs investigative work and other special assignments; performs a variety of technical law enforcement tasks; answers calls for the protection of life and property; enforces State, local and Federal laws and ordinances; and conducts a variety of preliminary and follow-up investigations.

About the City:

The City of Banning is located in Riverside County along the route of U.S. Interstate 10 approximately 25 miles northwest of Palm Springs and 82 miles east of Los Angeles. Beautifully situated in the San Gorgonio Pass between the two highest mountain peaks in Southern California, Banning is only minutes away from many desert and mountain resorts. One of Banning’s unique characteristics is that it provides the serenity of a rural setting ,yet it has easy access to major metropolitan areas.
  
 Its unique location is at a relatively high altitude (2,350 feet) in the pass which provides a favorable year-round climate and air quality. Its municipal boundaries encompass 22.117 square miles.
  
 Incorporated in 1913, Banning is a general law city with a council/manager type administration. The City has five elected council members, one of which is chosen mayor by the Council. The City Manager is the Chief Administrative Officer and is appointed by the City Council. The City of Banning is a full-service municipal government, which owns and operates its own electric and water utilities.
  
 It also offers its residents an airport, local police protection, municipal bus service, seven parks, a swimming complex, the seasonally operated Playhouse Bowl, as well as youth and leisure programs. Recreation opportunities are also abundant in nearby areas, which offer golfing, fishing, hiking, and equestrian trails.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 
Patrols assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe situations, and deters crime by providing high visibility; responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service; enforces State, local and Federal laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and requests assistance as required; investigates juvenile and designated adult criminal activity and incidents as the responding officer; coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses; oversees collection and preservation of physical evidence; restores order, protects life and property, and maintains other logs and records; investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic and crowd control as necessary; participates in special details and assignments, including K-9, motorcycle traffic officer and related activities; retrieves, identifies and returns found property and/or evidence to owners; provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response; provides information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public; testifies in court, as subpoenaed.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:  
  • Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and concepts
  • Knowledge of the techniques for dealing with people of all socio-economic levels under hostile and emergency situations
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work
  • Skill in observing and accurately recalling places, names, descriptive characteristics and facts of incidents
  • Skill in remaining calm and taking appropriate action in tense situations
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of works
  • Skill in reading, interpreting and applying complex laws, procedures and policies
  • Skill in making rapid, sound independent judgments within legal and procedural guidelines
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, records and other written materials
  • Skill in understanding and following oral and written directions
  • Ability to learn the principles, practices, procedures, laws and ordinances, terminology and operation of equipment used in law enforcement and crime prevention and investigation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate; college level course work in criminology, law enforcement, social sciences, public administration or a related field is desirable. Must be 21 or older at time of application; be a U.S. citizen; possess and maintain a valid California Driver License; be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays and must not have any felony convictions.

Lateral applicants:  Must be currently employed or employed within the past 12 months as a California Peace Officer with a minimum of one year of experience and possession of or eligible to possess a California POST Basic Certificate

Academy Graduates:  Must be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed within the last three years, a California POST approved Basic AcademyPHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONSRequires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping, and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds or more in the performance of daily activities.  Requires both near and far vision and the ability to distinguish colors and acute hearing.  Incumbents may work outdoors in all weather conditions. Entails working in hazardous situations, which may involve abusive persons, potential physical violence and the potential of risk of exposure to chemical and biological hazards.

Salary : $81,536 - $110,302
