General Purpose: This is a full-time position with the primary responsibility of providing high quality husbandry to the animals and assisting the Zoo Manager at the zoo.Supervision: Received: under the general supervision of the Zoo Manager.Exercised: occasional supervision of part-time/seasonal staff/interns as needed. Selection Guidelines: Normal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check; job related tests may be required.The duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
1. Routine husbandry of captive wild and domesticated animals.2. Prepare food and feed animals according to established schedules and prescribed diets.3. Clean, disinfect, and maintain animal enclosures and exhibits.4. Basic coat grooming, routine foot/hoof care, routine beak and wing trimming 5. Provide environmental enrichment to all animals following protocols6. Basic maintenance on animal habitats, animal containment, and visitor safety barriers6. Observe and assess animal behaviors and habits and report significant changes to supervisors.7. Recommend changes to improve animal care and work method efficiencies. 8. Assist with on-grounds veterinary procedures as needed9. Administer routine and prescribed medications to animals per vet instructions, including both oral medications and injectable medications. 10. Train animals for medical behaviors using positive reinforcement11. Assist with diet formulation and diet changes per Zoo Manager and Veterinary direction12. Assist Zoo Manager with recruitment, interviewing, and selection of interns13. Assist Zoo Manager with intern training on animal husbandry and zoo maintenance tasks. 14. Create and update intern lessons plans for documented learning opportunities15. Assign intern projects and track progress16. Assist Zoo Manager with development of education programming on-grounds, including Keeper Chats, Junior Zoo Keeper Camp, events. 17. Interact with visitors to educate them in animal biology and to increase their awareness of the role of zoos and animal conservation18. Assist Zoo Manager with zoo surveys, attendance counts, and other information needs.19. Use Zoo Facebook and Instagram to promote zoo programs and educate SM audience20. Post regularly on Social Media platforms21. Plan social media posts, take pictures, research and prepare text. 22. Work with approved vendors to purchase animal feed with-in budget 23. Track food usage and make sure that all inventory is stocked on-grounds at all times24. Maintain non-habitat horticultural features including flowering plants, shrubs, trees, etc.25. Clean, sanitize, and be responsible for park buildings, shelters, and recreational facilities.26. Responsible for turf maintenance including, mowing, trimming, etc.
