This is semiskilled and skilled maintenance and repair work. Work involves performance of a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets, walks, storm drainage, cemeteries, trees, and similar facilities. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. Work is performed under general supervision of the Public Works Crew leader and is reviewed through observation for results obtained, including completeness and workmanship.

Regular hours will be 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday-Friday. Successful candidates will be capable of performing a variety of physical tasks in all types of weather and will be available to respond to emergencies on days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays on a 7/24/365 basis. Position is based out of our Public Works building.

Starting salary pay is $30.15 an hour or the equivalent of $62,707 annually based upon IBEW Local #196 union contract.

Residency within 12 miles of City Limits required within 1 year of employment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, storm sewer lines, cemeteries, and other similar facilities.

Responsible for snow and ice removal during the winter months, operating plow trucks, and other similar equipment.

Operates front-end loader, backhoe, street sweeper and other similar equipment.

Operates a variety of non-vehicular equipment such as chain saws, welding torches, brush chipper, weed eaters, or related equipment.

Drives dump trucks to haul gravel, sand, asphalt, and salt; plows snow; spreads salt.

Performs preventive checks of vehicles and equipment used; may assist the mechanic in repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.

Performs landscaping activities including mowing grass, sweeping and raking grounds, planting and trimming trees and shrubs.

Performs road maintenance and repair tasks including heating asphalt, patching potholes and cracks, sidewalks, and curbs; operates concrete saws, air hammer, and drills.

Performs activities necessary to paint, construct, and install street and other signs; performs tasks necessary to the blocking off of construction sites including making barricades, placing flashers, and flagging traffic.

Sells gravesites; digs graves; organizes burial processes within City cemeteries.

Cleans and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment, including lubricating equipment and sharpening tools.

Ensures that equipment is used safely and in accordance with standard procedures and precautions.

Performs heavy physical labor loading and unloading trucks and attaching and detaching accessories to equipment such as plows and spreaders.

May prepare routine records on work and equipment.

May be called out on a 24-hour basis.

Provides effective and efficient customer services; promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience

Five years previous municipal experience desired.

Graduation from high school (or GED); considerable experience working with construction, maintenance, and repair equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.

Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation.

Knowledge of the safety hazards and precautions associated with the operation of motorized and heavy equipment.

Knowledge of snow removal equipment, processes, and experience in snow removal.

Skill in the safe and effective operation, care, and maintenance of assigned equipment and tools.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to perform difficult physical tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather.

Special Requirements/Qualifications

Residency within 12 miles of City Limits required within 1 year of employment.

Possession of a valid Illinois Commercial driver's license (CDL A) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Possession of or ability to obtain Flaggers, Pesticide, or other certifications as assigned and directed by the Department.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
