What are the responsibilities and job description for the Airport Ops Electrician position at City of Battle Creek (MI)?
The City of Battle Creek's Executive Airport is looking for a journeyman electrician to maintain electrical equipment, assist with operations and maintenance tasks, construction, upkeep, and repair duties for airport grounds and facilities; related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Airport Operations Manager.
The current vacancy shall be temporary in nature. However, if future circumstances lead to the position remaining vacant, then this temporary position will become permanent.
This work is sedentary and requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, working with explosives and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location.

- Maintains, operates and repairs the airfield lighting system, including runways, taxiways, guidance sign system, rotating beacon, and navigational aids; operates and monitors the pc based airfield lighting control systems.
- Inspects, maintains, operates and repairs electrical components, transformers, motors, panels, circuits, switch gears, electrical panels, electrical wiring, single and three phase, 120, 480, and 2,400 volt AC circuits and high voltage light system.
- Participates in snow removal and ice control monitoring and removal activities. Operates power driven heavy and field equipment and small tools to maintain grounds and facilities including herbicide application, landscaping, welding, grading, earth work and clearing drainage waterways.
- Performs visual inspections, routine maintenance, and manual labor in maintaining all airport runways, taxiways, safety areas, grounds, fences, drainage, facilities, gates, pavement, lighting, and fixed structures; Monitors environmental conditions, wildlife conditions and hazardous materials and provides appropriate response. Reviews operational condition and maintenance records of facility and identifies and schedules needed maintenance or repair.
- Troubleshoots, installs, replaces or adjusts electrical fixtures such as building and runway/taxiway lights, bulbs, generators, rotating beacon and navigational aids, and related parts. Dismantles, adjusts, repairs, and replaces major and minor electrical systems parts and maintain and repair airport lighting systems. Operates a variety of tools and equipment used in general mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance work.
- Makes general repairs to plumbing, windows, drains, sprinklers and other building systems, assist in grading and earth moving work, and installs and repairs fencing and roofing; performs rough carpentry work and masonry work necessary to maintain airport buildings, facilities and grounds.
- Completes and maintains work records to include complaint resolution, maintenance and repair logs, vehicle repair logs, daily inspection logs, NOTAMs, FAA records and other related documentation. Orders parts/materials as required and prepares records and reports to ensure proper inventory control.
- Provides assistance during safety related or aircraft incidents or emergencies. May interact with tenants and operators to inform and coordinate operational and maintenance outages or planned activity; responds to routine requests, questions and/or complaints and initiates problem resolution.
- Performs general custodial duties in care of maintenance facilities and airport buildings.
- State of Michigan Electrician’s Journeyman Electrician License.
- 3 years electrical experience in the installation, maintenance and operation of high voltage (up to 2400 volts), industrial power transmission and distribution systems.
- 2 years recent experience in an airport operations/maintenance environment.
- Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
- Federal fingerprint based criminal history background check is required.
