What are the responsibilities and job description for the Income Tax Auditor position at City of Battle Creek (MI)?
The City of Battle Creek is looking for an experienced Income Tax Auditor to work in the preparation and maintenance of municipal income tax records, including bookkeeping and statistical record keeping; related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the supervision of the Income Tax Administrator.
- Responds to taxpayer inquiries, answers telephones, makes appointments, and composes and/or prepares correspondence.
- Enters, reviews, audits and verifies accuracy of municipal income tax returns and all attachments for individuals, corporations and partnerships. Analyzes tax records, issues and collects invoices for taxes and penalties due the city.
- Prepares and maintains detailed records related to taxpayer information including but not limited to corporate withholding, reconciliation’s, billing and payments.
- Assists in gathering, recording and summarizing income tax data, and calling attention to any unusual findings.
- Monitors tax laws and makes recommendations to implement compliance actions when changes effect municipal taxing activities; organizes and implements timely procedures for collecting delinquent accounts including, but not limited to, filing civil actions.
- Provides customer service to taxpayers on issues such as collections, civil actions, bankruptcy claims, and other office related matters. Answers telephones, makes appointments, and provides information on City Income Tax Ordinance, and regulations governing preparation and submission of income tax returns.
- Preforms compliance activities including but not limited to verification of state filings, comparing current filings with previous year’s filings, street and business review.
- Composes and/or prepares correspondence, reports, and other documentation as necessary.
- Regular use of office equipment including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheet, database management and software; maintains rigorous typing speed, skill, and accuracy.
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with at least one (1) course in Basic Individual Income Tax or Federal Taxation.
- 2 years recent experience in responsible Federal and/or municipal income tax preparation.
Special Requirements:
- Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
