What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Battle Creek (MI)?
The City of Battle Creek is looking for Lifeguards at our Full Blast Recreation Center! Lifeguards will be responsible for surveying a body of water and conducting rescues to help weak or injured swimmers get to safety. Their duties include speaking with swimmers to enforce swimming rules keeping track of each swimmer in the water and administering first aid to injured swimmers. Lifeguards are under the direct supervision of the Recreation Manager.
- Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations by activating the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Opening and closing the pool each day according to scheduled hours
- Closely monitoring activities related to the pool area, identifying any safety issues throughout shift
- Directing swimmers out of water in dangerous conditions

- Communicate daily with the Director as to daily plans, special needs, absences from the program, discipline of children, difficulties with other counselors and any other concerns.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Will need to be able to obtain First Aid and Infant, Child and Adult CPR (provided).
- Experience working with children (preferred).

- Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted.
While performing the duties of this job, a lifeguard's physical requirements typically include strong swimming ability, endurance to sit and scan the water for extended periods, the ability to quickly react and perform rescues in water, lift and carry weight, and often require good vision and hearing to monitor a large area; working conditions usually involve exposure to sun, heat, water, while being alert and attentive to potential dangers in the water. Must be able to swim.
