Description
The City of Battle Creek's Department of Public Works is looking for an individual to perform manual work operating equipment in the general construction, maintenance, and repair of parks, grounds and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the close supervision of the Foreman II.
Examples of Duties
- Operates trucks, tractors, skid-steer, power mowers, snow blowers, snowplows, brush chippers, chain saws, power washers, light power-driven equipment, tools, and similar equipment.
- Paints, repairs, and services equipment and facilities.
- Plows and shovels snow, picks up garbage, disposes of human waste, and other refuse.
- Assists with landscaping work such as sprinkler installation, grading, and filling.
- Performs skilled maintenance and repair work including carpentry, bricklaying, asphalt/concrete work and repair, sprinkler system and water fountains maintenance and repair as qualified or assigned.
- Mows and trims grass, cuts brush and rakes leaves; cleans and maintains picnic grounds, streets, gutters and other park areas.
- Plants, transplants, fertilizes, waters, trims, removes, and sprays grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers, or performs other plant life maintenance as required.
- Interacts with pedestrians and various park users.
- Assists with the maintenance and installation of monuments, plaques, and playground equipment.
- Prepares records as required.
Typical Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Up to 1 year experience in general maintenance, repair, and custodial activities including landscaping and basic construction.
- Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan with a valid DOT Medical Card upon hire.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, working at night, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
