Job Flyer: Maintenance Worker-Water division

This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains, service lines, hydrants, meters, and other water system components, including tasks like locating underground leaks, performing flow tests, flushing hydrants, responding to customer complaints related to water quality, and ensuring proper safety procedures are followed while working on the water distribution system.  

The position functions as a crew member performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks supporting the operation, maintenance and repair of the city's water distribution and sewer collection systems, water production systems and lift stations and operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment to perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Operate construction equipment and power tools such as dump trucks, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, concrete saws, sewer rodders, mowers, edger's and blowers, and maintain hand tools and assigned equipment in good working order.
  • Operate and maintain related pumping and control equipment for safe operation of potable water production and treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems and lift stations.
  • Install traffic control devices and perform traffic flagging functions in work zones to ensure a safe working environment according to established safety guidelines.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment, or forward to supervisor in efficient and timely manner.
  • Prepare reports regarding completed activities.
  • Operate and maintain various hand and power tools in a safe manner.
  • Operate push mowers, edgers, weed eater, small riding mowers, chain saws, and tree pruners.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and power equipment safely.
  • Operate and maintain an assigned vehicle including fuel, oil and notification of repairs as needed.
  • Operate a variety of equipment in the installation, operation, videoing, repair and maintenance of water main lines, water services, valves, fire hydrants, and other water supply facilities at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly and in conformance with all Federal and State requirements and operating permit conditions as directed.
  • Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment, to operate a jackhammer, and pour and assist in finishing concrete, construct concrete forms, and perform rough carpentry work.
  • Locate and repair breaks in water mains and review maps for valve locations, set up traffic control devices, and excavate holes, repair or replace as needed.
  • Operate a variety of equipment in the repair and maintenance of landscaping and grounds improvements for water and sewer facilities, to water, mow, weed, trim, renovate and fertilize lawns, play areas and foot traffic areas, and maintain trees and landscaping.
  • Respond to service calls regarding water quality, pressure and leaks.
  • Operate leak detection devices and pipe locating equipment.
  • Inspect water meters and backflow devices for proper operations.
  • Reads water meters.
  • Coordinates routine maintenance on city vehicles and equipment for oil changes, brakes, heating and cooling with Fleet shop, and coordinate shop repair for larger jobs; perform light metal fabrication as needed for repair of public works equipment.
  • Perform light carpentry in City facilities when directed.
  • Provide assistance for special events set up and take down, as directed.
  • Perform routine repairs on inside plumbing as needed; provide support for building security and gate systems as needed.
  • Timely and regular attendance.
  • Follow/adhere to all city policies and procedures, and safety program regulations and requirements.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Other Potential Duties and Responsibilities (Sewer division):
  • Operate a variety of equipment in the installation, operation, videoing, repair and maintenance of sewer lines, drain tiles, manholes, pumps, and sewer collection facilities at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly and in conformance with all Federal and State requirements and operating permit conditions as directed.
  • Locate and repair breaks in sewer mains and review maps for manhole locations, set up traffic control devices, and excavate holes, repair or replace as needed.

  • Safety practices and procedures applicable to assigned work.

  • Construction and maintenance materials, methods, and techniques for streets, street signs, parks and stormwater facilities.
Ability to:
  • Troubleshoot and analyze field problems relating to street, park, and stormwater facilities, and to develop effective solutions to such problems.
  • Operate equipment safely, and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often in foul weather conditions.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers and other City personnel, contractors, and the general public.
  • Responds to system maintenance and service calls outside scheduled work hours while on call or in the event of an emergency. 
  • Perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Gauge work progress and make adjustments to meet deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and courteously with the public, co-workers and city personnel.
  • Work as a team member and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Adapt to changing job requirements and cross training within the Operations Division.
  • Maintain, disclose and destroy public records in accordance with the requirements of the WA Public Records Act and WA State Archives records retention guidelines.

•    One (1) year of maintenance or construction experience is preferred.

Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements:
•    Possess a valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City.  
•    Possess or have ability to obtain a Washington State CDL driver’s license with Class B endorsement within six (6) months of hire date.
•    Possess or have ability to obtain Washington State Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
•    Possess or have ability to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within six (6) months.
•    Possess or have ability to obtain Forklift Certification within six (6) months.
•    Certified in sewer collection systems or as a Cross Connection Control Specialist is desirable.
•    Certified as a Water Distribution Manager I is highly desirable.
•    Must successfully pass all phases of the pre-employment hiring process, including but not limited to, reference checks, a criminal background check, and medical evaluation, including a pre-employment drug screening.

Note: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job will be considered.Physical demands including prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting objects up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, crawling into tight spaces, and operating machinery, often working outdoors in varying weather conditions, potentially exposed to chemicals, loud noises, and extreme temperatures while performing tasks like pipe repairs, valve replacements, and meter installations; requiring both manual dexterity and visual acuity. May be required to work on-call for emergency repairs, including nights and weekends.

Salary : $4,827 - $6,141
