Essential Job Functions: Under the supervision of a Registered Sanitarian, is responsible for performing professional sanitarian services and routine inspections of food establishments, beverage establishments, daycare centers, foster homes, halfway houses, grocery stores, meat markets, vending machines, mobile food units and temporary food establishments and other miscellaneous food establishments. Investigates complaints of general nuisances and food borne illnesses. Prepares written reports on inspection findings; Outlines any violation of regulations, recommends corrective measures to be taken and possible court action. Provides education and technical assistance to the public regarding environmental health matters including but not limited to food preparation and storage. Investigates food poisoning outbreaks and follows direction of supervisory personnel. Exercises no supervision. Reviews blue prints on new or extremely remodeled food establishments. Participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities. Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Required to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions, maybe subject to extreme temperature swings; will be required to work rotating weekends and after 5:00 p.m. during the normal work week; may be required to work Emergency occurrences after normal working hours.
Knowledge: Knowledge of principles and practices of environmental sanitation, and of state and federal laws pertaining to public health and its organizations, knowledge of state laws pertaining to retail food establishments.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; excellent writing and presentation skills; ability to speak and communicate with the public.
Physical Requirements: Constantly sees, writes, squats, climbs, drives, stoops, writes by hand; frequently operates a camera performs data entry, lifts and pushes objects weighing up to 25 lbs., pulls objects weighing up to 40 lbs., infrequently operates a fax machine.
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in basic or natural science; Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or field closely related to sanitation preferred. Ability to obtain registration as a sanitarian in Texas within one year of employment date.

Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver's license. Must be able to acquire a driver's license within 30 days of employment.
