SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs maintenance and minor repairs on all City owned vehicles and motorized equipment, including police and fire vehicles, and other specialized equipment. Responsible for inspecting vehicles and equipment and performing preventative maintenance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as cars, light trucks, medium duty trucks, backhoes, tractors, mowers, loaders, etc., as well as on small engines, pumps, weed-eaters, generators, chainsaws, etc.
  2. Works closely with other technicians in performing complex repairs.
  3. Performs vehicle preventive maintenance and minor repairs oil changes, transmission fluid changes and overall vehicle inspections.
  4. Responds to calls for roadside assistance and performs field minor repairs as assigned.
  5. Maintains and completes assigned work orders in a timely manner.  Logs time, materials, parts, and supplies.
  6. Maintains a clean and safe work area and may clean vehicles or equipment.
  7. Assists other divisions of the Public Works Department as needed, including emergency call back.
  8. May perform other duties and special projects, as assigned.
  9. Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma / GED plus one (1) year of experience in minor automotive repair and/or fleet maintenance operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) within one (1) year of hire.
  • ASE Certifications can be substituted with an Automotive Certification(s) from a dealership with equivalent or higher mechanical courses/training. Automotive Certifications from a dealership will be evaluated to determine if additional pay may apply.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of:

  • Repair principles, practices, and techniques for vehicles and a variety of equipment.
  • Tools and fluids used in mechanical repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
  • Methods and techniques for lubricating automobile and equipment parts.
  • Systems and components of equipment and vehicles, including engine and mechanical operations.
  • Safety procedures and practices.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Computer and program software.

 

Skill in:

  • Monitoring assigned activities.
  • Operating assigned equipment.
  • Time management and prioritization.

 

Ability to:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment/vehicles.
  • Operate a variety of equipment related to the performance of equipment services.
  • Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
  • Follow both written and oral instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Use vehicle repair and preventative maintenance check list.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk and climb or balance.

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to flames or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme heat, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
