What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Maintenance Worker position at CITY OF BEDFORD?
SUMMARY
Under direct supervision completes daily work orders and assigned tasks. Regularly completes tasks outdoors in varying weather, including hot and cold conditions that occur North Central Texas. Assigned tasks including outdoor physical labor, using hand tools and small machines related to one or more of the following specialized tasks:
- Water Distribution and Wastewater Maintenance
- Water Systems Operations
- Street and Sidewalk Maintenance
- Stormwater Maintenance
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General:
- Receive and follow written work orders or verbal instructions from department leadership.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, specialized equipment and standard office equipment, such as copiers and computers.
- Respond to emergency calls; investigate citizen complaints.
- Document observations and work completed following department procedure.
- Perform daily checks of materials, equipment, supplies, vehicles, and tools.
- Assist with City operations during disasters, emergencies and special events, including standby and emergency callback.
- Perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
- Maintains and cleans equipment and city vehicles after use.
- Adhere to all City and department safety rules and procedures.
- Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.
Water Distribution and Wastewater Maintenance:
- Maintains and repairs all elements of the water distribution system, including pipes, valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and other devices.
- Maintains and cleans the wastewater collection system, including pipes, clean-outs, manholes.
- Installs new water and wastewater connections.
Water Systems Operations:
- Read and record utility meter readings both manually and with electronic equipment.
- Turn on/turn off water service for Utility Billing division. Operate service connection valves using hand tools.
- Inspect meters and prepare work orders for any abnormalities or issues.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on meters and associated equipment.
- Assist Water Quality crews with routine flushing and hydrant maintenance.
- Assist Water Utility crews in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water utility systems.
Street and Sidewalk Maintenance:
- Constructs, maintains and repairs asphalt and concrete surfaces of streets and their curbs, gutters, drive approaches and sidewalks.
- Installs and repairs guard rails and delineators along roadways for traffic safety.
- Assist with the removal of trees and debris from roadways.
- Completes pavement and sidewalk preparation/treatment for inclement weather.
Stormwater Maintenance:
- Performs assigned maintenance, repairs, or improvements of municipal stormwater drainage and conveyance system by cleaning and clearing waterways, repairing and preventing erosion, constructing concrete drainage structures, maintaining and repairing storm drain lines, trimming or removing trees, and vegetation. Constructs and repairs surface drains and related structures with materials such as asphalt, cold patch materials, or concrete.
- Assists with the treatment of waterways for mosquito control. Traps, collects, and transports mosquito samples for testing.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma/GED. Some related experience and/or training preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Required:
- Valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain a Work Zone Traffic Control certification within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred:
- Commercial Driver’s License
- TCEQ, TDA, IMSA, TXDOT Certifications related to the assigned division
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
SPECIALIZED KSA’S
Working knowledge of street, water, wastewater and drainage maintenance procedures and equipment operating practices.
