Library Technician I - Adult Services Librarian

PART-TIME REGULAR

Annual Salary: $32,136 ($15.45 an hour)

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs highly responsible, professional library work that includes: 1) planning, organizing, and implementing of workforce development, career enhancement, skills development and job search programing; 2) developing and providing computer skills workshops; assisting library patrons with issues at the library’s public computers and, where possible, with online or email assistance; assisting the director and staff in developing and promoting the library’s electronic resources; 3) assisting with Makerspace programming; and 4) planning, organizing, and implementing community sustainability and resiliency programming. Provides library services to adults, including Circulation services, reference, reader’s advisory, programming, community activities, and collection development; works with staff to monitor and evaluate services to adults; assists with promotion and publicization of adult services and other library programs for the community. Works under the supervision of the Library Director. Duties are conducted with independent judgment and initiative and are performed in accordance with the policies of the Belen Public Library and the Laws of the State of New Mexico.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develops, promotes and offers a variety of work readiness skills and employment resources, from job search to career planning to skills development, with special emphasis on the unemployed and veterans
  • Developes and conducts a variety of basic computer skills classes for the public, staff, city employees, and local businesses or non-profits, either in-person or online
  • Provides technical assistance to library patrons using public computers, printers and copiers, or with computer questions in-person or by email
  • Promotes the library’s resouces to the public, government and business with informational fliers, social media and website posts, and online materials such as YouTube videos to support local goals for workforce, community and economic development
  • Develops, promotes and offers a variety of workshops, Do-It-Yourself resources, and other efforts to increase the sustainability and resilience of patrons and communities in the library service area, including participation in the Sustainable Libraries Initiative
  • Promotes the library’s educational resources for adults that enhance job readiness and employment opportunities, including trades, professionals, and small businesses, and enhance household and community sustainability
  • Attends the necessary trainings and workshops for libraries and entrepreneurship, sustainability, DIY skills and resources, and any other educational programs suggested by the Library Director
  • Supports the Circulation Services Librarian, maintaining patrons’ confidentiality, library card records and the member database; checking library materials out and in; and assisting with reserves and renewals
  • Follows the policies and procedures as set forth by the City of Belen
  • Mindfully chooses resources to enhance the Adult library collections using professional reviews and following the Library’s Collection Development policy
  • Provides answers to routine and complex questions in print and electronic formats
  • Staffs public service desks and evening/weekend programming as needed
  • Maintains and reports high-quality, accurate data about patrons, programs, and services through online database and manual systems
  • Continuously promotes the value of literacy and reading, with an emphasis on reading as a lifelong skill
  • Develops and expands the skills and interest to work well with diverse populations
  • Plans, schedules, and arranges library services for those who are infrequent users or nonusers of the library or services for those who are traditionally underserved, including poor and homeless people, ethnically diverse people, older adults, adult new and non-readers, Veterans, incarcerated people and ex-offenders, people with disabilities, LGBT populations, and rural and geographically isolated communities
  • Establishes and maintains professional and courteous working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public
  • Must work independently and complete activities according to work schedule(s)
  • Must work evenings and weekends as required
  • Ensures that each individual patron receives the highest possible standard of customer service
  • Ensures compliance with State of New Mexico Laws and Regulations, and the American Library Association’s Statements
  • Interviews customers to determine information needs; decides appropriate search strategies; provides answers to routine and complex reference questions in print and electronic formats;
  • Assists at Belen Harvey House as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned and participates in cross-training to perform other library functions

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, as well as excellent tutoring skills and listening skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with persons of all ages and every economic and social level
  • In-depth knowledge of workforce development and community sustainability
  • Working knowledge of computing devices including tablets and smartphones, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, general computer software, operating systems, applications and processes, and of the Internet, including effective use of email and search engines, evaluating websites and online safety
  • Enthusiasm and patience in working with workshop participants and computer users of all ages and skill levels
  • Equivalent to the completion of a four-year accredited college degree in education, library science, natural or social science, or other related fields and/or related workexperience
  • Able to develop proficiency with Library computer platforms and programs, and with Social Media
  • Able to determine the reference needs of the community and select appropriate resources
  • Comfortable with fast-paced multi-tasking
  • Able to work well with diverse populations
  • Able to organize and perform work functions independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision
  • Spanish Proficiency (preferred)
  • Must successfully pass a drug test and background check
  • Possesses a valid New Mexico driver’s license

EQUIPMENT USED:

Knowledge to include use of common office equipment, such as typewriter, computer, calculator, copier, fax, and phone.

The employee is occasionally required to push, pull, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Position requires frequent sitting directed vision at computer screen.

The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and move up to 120 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
