Description
Performs difficult technical and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of machinery and equipment in the water treatment plant; performs related duties as required.
An employee in this class performs work in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of large and specialized equipment and machinery in the water treatment plant. Work involves the responsibility for maintaining pumps, motors, clarifiers, chlorinators, filters, and other related plant equipment. Work requires knowledge of trade skills in mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and electronic areas. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent or Senior Plant Operator. Work is evaluated in terms of effectiveness in returning equipment to proper operating conditions within given time schedules, and overall effectiveness of system performance.
This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; use a computer terminal; visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of water treatment; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; considerable knowledge of the tools, parts, and methods associated with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment; some knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry; some knowledge of state laws regulating water treatment and the standard procedures necessary to meet permitted requirements; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound, and chart readings, and to take proper remedial action; ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints, and written and oral instructions; ability to provide leadership and guidance to lead workers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superior; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
