What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Mechanic I or II position at City of Beloit?
The City of Beloit has an exciting employment opportunity as a General Mechanic working with the Community Development Department in the Transit Division. The General Mechanic will be working with advanced mechanical work that includes the most technical diagnostic, repair, and rebuilding work (e.g. complete engine, transmission, or component unit disassembly, rebuilding, re-assembly, testing, etc.) in reference to motor coaches. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of mechanical repairs necessary to maintain transit vehicles and equipment within acceptable work standards with a minimum of supervision. The position is also responsible for driving city buses, trucks and related duties when required and other duties may be assigned.

- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 21 years of age or older
- A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
- A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Permit upon hire
- A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger (“P”) and air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire
- General Mechanic I- Minimum of 1 year of responsible work experience working with gas and diesel engines. General Mechanic II - Minimum of 3 years of responsible work experience working with gas and diesel engines.
- Transit Bus Technician Certification through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is desired
- Section 609 Technician Certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency or the ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.
- Federal Medical Card required by the US Department of Transportation and Wisconsin Department of Transportation
- Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
