Reports To: Parks Superintendent
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs various semi-skilled and technical tasks in the maintenance and operation of buildings, grounds, open spaces, parks, and recreation systems. The Groundskeeper Supervisor manages the overall turf management program for the entire park system.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Works with and supervises park maintenance employees, part-time seasonal mowing crews, and community service workers as required and assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Manages the overall turf program for the entire parks system, including, but not limited to, seeding, irrigation, chemical application, fertilization, mowing, trimming, edging, and winterizing irrigation systems and facilities.
- Manages seasonal employees and/or community service workers in turf management, including the mowing crews.
- Manages Markey Park if the Athletic Facilities Supervisor is unavailable.
- Manages the routine maintenance program on lawn and power equipment.
- Plants and maintains landscaping, including lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.
- Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
- Operates tractors, mowers, jackhammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe building and grounds maintenance techniques.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
- Open, close, locks and unlock facilities as needed.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs and prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
- Installs and maintains goal posts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, and basketball.
- Assists in constructing new park facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
- Assists maintenance team with snow removal at all facilities.
- Keeps records of work completed.
- On-call Supervisor for all turf and grounds-related issues.
- Assists the Recreation Department with maintenance activities when required or requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned and directed by the Park Superintendent.
- Assist with special events as needed.
- Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent,
- Four years' experience in park maintenance, equipment repair, and grounds landscaping and maintenance work, or
- Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Valid state driver's license.
- Herbicide applicator's license (must obtain within 6 months of hire)
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Endorsement w/Airbrakes (must obtain with one year of hire

- Pickup truck and 15-passenger van; lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, aerator, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; swimming pool equipment including chlorination system, pumps, boiler, valves, filtration devices, gauges, etc.; janitorial equipment including floor buffers, steam cleaner, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, and dusting equipment.
