Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and public works equipment.   Diagnoses all types of vehicles, including heavy equipment, trucks, refuse truck, fire apparatus, small engines and trailers. 

  • Supervision Received
    • Works under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent – Streets.  Daily work direction provided by Lead Mechanic.
  • Supervision Exercised
    •  None generally, may provide work direction to Employees assigned to the shop/garage on a temporary basis.

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
  • Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all City vehicles and public works and parks equipment. Assists in maintaining service records for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
  • Tests, services and repairs vehicles and equipment including engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, cooling, emission, exhaust, drive, steering, brake, air brakes and associated electronic systems, diesel after treatment systems and other related systems.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Cuts and welds metal and perform body repair, touch up and related work; designs and fabricates various steel work project.
    Assists in snow removal operations as necessary.  Operates front end loader, tandem axle dump and plow truck.
  • Installs accessories such as beacon lights, two-way radios, back up cameras and other related equipment.
  • Purchases equipment, parts and supplies used for vehicle and equipment system maintenance; maintains necessary inventory levels.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles or equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • Responds to required job tasks on 24-hour scheduled or emergency basis as necessary, including possible night, holiday and weekend hours.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains and cleans shop and related surrounding areas.
Peripheral Duties
  • Performs other Public Works related duties as necessary or assigned.
  • May serve as a member of various Employee committees.
  • Education & Experience
    • Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus two (2) years specialized training in diesel mechanics, equipment maintenance management, or a closely related field; and
    • Two (2) years' experience in vehicle, truck and heavy equipment maintenance, repair and operation; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of practices, methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, road maintenance, construction, public safety and/or related equipment; considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
    • Thorough knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards, requirements, reporting and record keeping practices. Proper use of lock out tag out.
    • General knowledge and skill in the use of computers.
    • Ability to perform manual labor associated with major mechanical equipment repair; ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; ability to read circuit diagrams and maintenance manuals; ability to maintain effective record keeping procedures; ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, vendors and the general public.
    • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Special Requirements
    • Must possess a valid State Class A or B motor vehicle Commercial Driver's License (CDL) operator’s license with hazardous and tanker endorsement or be able to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
    • State Special Engineer steam pressure boiler license preferred but not required.
    • Must possess a forklift operator’s license or have the ability to obtain it within one year of employment.
  • Tools & Equipment Used
    • Motorized vehicles for testing purposes; power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor and major repairs and routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; welders and cutting torches; machinist equipment; calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio; personal computer (including word processing, spreadsheet, database and other software).

    • The Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds and occasionally move or lift over one hundred (100) pounds. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The Employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
    • Working in and around the refuse truck one or more times per week. The Employee comes into contact with human feces, animal feces, hypodermic needles and blood borne pathogens.
    • The noise level in the work environment is normally moderately loud to loud.
  • Selection Guidelines
    • Formal application, rating of education and experience oral interview and reference check will be conducted. Job-related testing may be required.
