DIVISION CHIEF/ FIRE-FIRE MARSHALL
SALARY RANGE: $96,053 to $128,721
The Division Chief is a supervisory and administrative class position, working under the direction of the Fire Chief. The Division Fire Chief is responsible for implementing, organizing, and directing the activities of the Fire Department. Incumbents in this class direct and supervise fire personnel and assume responsibility for efficiently and effectively administering assigned programs in firefighting, fire prevention, fire services.
Examples of Duties:
1. Performs on-site command and directs emergency operations of Rescue, Firefighting, EMS, and hazardous material incidents until relieved by the Fire Chief.
2. Evaluates emergency site conditions and through the application of discretionary judgment and experiences requests additional assistance or releases companies as required.
3. Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the work of all personnel.
4. Maintains emergency readiness in all assigned fire and EMS equipment and supplies, including the ability to be dispatched whether in the station, from the station, or out of the station. Responsible for planning and overseeing the routine maintenance of: Fire and EMS apparatus, equipment and tools.
5. Training: Responsible for the coordination of all phases of fire department training, including continuing education programs. Prepare, compile, and maintain training, response, certification and/or license records as required by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Submit timely reports to the Fire Chief on a monthly basis.
6. Responsible for the correct notation in journals, electronic media, preservation of all orders, notices, document communications and records pertaining to the operation of their shift, and for the completeness, accuracy, dispatch and timeliness of all reports. Investigates and makes reports of any and/or all unusual occurrences concerning the Department.
7. Assists the Fire Chief in Public Information Officer Responsibilities, when needed.
8. Prepares and maintains required records for the State of Texas including: T.X.F.I.R.S. and Texas Commission on Fire Protection records pertaining to Ladder Testing, Hose Testing, SCBA testing, Pump Testing, P.P.E. Testing, and Paid personnel status and injuries.
9. Prepares and maintains records pertaining to personnel records, research materials, Fire reports and training. Responsible for maintaining and submitting records to Tarrant County and Texas State Fire Marshals’ offices as required by law.
10. Fire Prevention Officer: Responsible for the coordination of a fire safety and education program. Prepare, compile and distribute fire safety information through use of media, fire safety presentations, classroom instruction, and other means to the public.
11. Responsible for fire code enforcement inspections, conducts annual fire inspections of local businesses, plans examination, participation in the development review committee, and maintain all records under direction of the Fire Chief.
12. Develop and submit tactical and procedural changes and submit recommendations to the Fire Chief for approval.
13. Ability and Knowledge to operate any fire apparatus or other departmental vehicles.
14. Maintain certification in both Fire and EMS disciplines as required.
15. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Working Conditions and Hazards: Normally has inside/outside working conditions, with possible exposure to all extremes of the environment; possible exposure to toxic and non-toxic noxious odors, fumes, dusts, mists and gases. Possible exposure to extremes of heat from fire; possible exposure to all other hazards inherent to firefighting operations.

Physical Requirements: Lifting objects in excess of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more. Able to maintain body equilibrium when climbing and working on slippery surfaces.
Knowledge of: Laws, ordinances, rules and regulations pertinent to Fire Department activities; principles and practices of firefighting, fire safety, fire prevention and inspection techniques; fire training practices and techniques; principles and practices of fire administration and supervision.
Ability to: Plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate staff; direct and evaluate firefighting efforts, use sound judgment and react calmly under emergency conditions; plan, assign, review and supervise operations of firefighting equipment and personnel under emergency conditions; express one’s self clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; keep records and make reports.
Skills to: Communicate both in written and verbal forms; read and interpret blueprints and maps; coordinate; utilize firefighting techniques; apply firefighting and resuscitation techniques; coordinate emergency medical care response.
Education Requirements: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. An Associate Degree in Fire Science or related subject area is preferred. Must possess a Class “B” Texas Driver’s License. Advanced Fire Fighter Certification, Inspector I and II/ Plans Examiner must obtain Fire Instructor II and Fire Life Safety Educator issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection within one (1) year, Active Paramedic Certification as issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
