Position: Engineering Assistant
Department/Bureau: Public Works/Engineering
Position Summary: This position is responsible for engineering duties including surveying, inspecting construction projects, and assisting in construction project management.
Essential Functions: Assists in preparation of construction plans and specifications; performs sidewalk and curb inspections and associated reporting and filing; assist Chief of Survey; creates reports, keeps records, and prepares as-built drawings; inspects Public Works construction projects; inspects construction in the right of way including curb, sidewalk, driveway and sewer connections; assists in the administration of Engineering Bureau permits using Community Plus; collects sewer meter data, utilizing special computer hardware and software.
Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a standard high school required, college and/or advance level courses in construction, Auto CAD and Civil Engineering preferred; minimum of one year of experience in construction, concrete, asphalt and utility construction; valid driver’s license; or equivalent experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of construction techniques, engineering principles, and material testing; ability to record data accurately and apply data to engineering activities; ability to prepare design and field drawings and specifications under direction; ability to read and understand contract drawings and specifications; experience in concrete, asphalt and utility construction; ability to perform work in a construction atmosphere in a safe orderly manner.
