The City of Biddeford’s Recreation Department has a great opportunity for a seasoned lifeguard with ocean experience. The Head Lifeguard is expected to have direct contact and oversight of all Lifeguards and support the mission of the Recreation Department.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the hiring process of new lifeguards
- Responsible for supervision, training, testing, and scheduling of staff
- Conducts opening and closing procedures, and oversees the public beaches during hours of operation
- Maintains the safety of the public beach areas, swimming areas, and all employees and staff, at all times
- Maintains a good, positive attitude, and acts as a role model for all staff and beach patrons
- Responsible for making the staff schedule, creating rotations, and staffing the beaches appropriately
- Ensure that all lifeguards know the policies, rules, and regulations related to the beach and water and enforces said policies to prevent accidents
- Establishes weekly trainings and workouts for all lifeguards and ensures that they maintain adequate physical condition
- Oversees the care and appropriate use of equipment
- Establishes emergency procedures for beach sites and remains alert in order to detect potential hazardous conditions and/or patrons in distress
- Acts in emergencies to rescue and render appropriate first aid procedures to patrons as necessary
- Performs administrative duties, including daily records of patrons assisted, patrons rescued, first aid provided, weather conditions, and ocean conditions
- Courteously answers questions from beach patrons when possible, without being distracted from lifeguard duties
- Weekend and holiday work required
Required Qualifications
- Experience working in ocean conditions
- Experience managing staff
- Ability to exercise good judgment in enforcing rules firmly and tactfully
- Reacts swiftly and calmly in emergencies
- Can identify and prevent dangerous situations or emergencies, and take effective and appropriate action
- Ability to remain alert for long periods of time
- The employee must occasionally move equipment such as rescue boards, umbrellas, and other lifeguard equipment
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- A willingness to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
Licenses/Certifications:
- First Aid and CPR Certified
- Current Lifeguard Certification
*City of Biddeford will reimburse the cost of certification*
Job Types: Full-time, Seasonal
Pay: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Day shift
- Holidays
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
