Under the general supervision of a Head Lifeguard or Assistant Head Lifeguard, this employee guards the safety of patrons at assigned ocean and freshwater beaches in the City and provides information pertaining to beach and water conditions.
Responsibilities
- Ensures the safety of all patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies
- Responsible for the swimming and beach areas during hours of operation
- Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations related to beach use
- Remains alert in order to detect potentially hazardous conditions and patrons in distress and renders appropriate first aid to patrons as necessary
- Educates the public about the beach and water safety and other public safety matters, while maintaining compliance with state and local laws that pertain to beach ordinances
- Assists in performing administrative duties, including daily records of patrons helped, patrons rescued, first aid provided, weather conditions, and ocean conditions
- Helps maintain the general appearance and cleanliness of the beach areas
- Courteously answers questions from beach patrons when possible, without being distracted from lifeguard duties
- Enforces the rules consistently and fairly
- Participates in trainings as required
- Maintains and monitors assigned equipment and supplies
- Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required
- Weekend and holiday work required
Required Qualifications
- Participates in and completes daily workouts and trainings
- Learns ocean water safety, and the rules and regulations of swimming and beach areas
- Exercises good judgment in enforcing rules firmly and tactfully
- Reacts swiftly and calmly in emergencies
- Ability to remain alert for long periods of time
- Capable of working well with others and the public
- The employee must occasionally move equipment such as rescue boards, umbrellas, and other lifeguard equipment
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- Willing to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
Licenses/Certifications:
- First Aid and CPR Certified
- Current Lifeguard Certification
*City of Biddeford will reimburse the cost of certification*
Job Types: Full-time, Seasonal, Temporary
Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Day shift
- Holidays
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
Experience:
- Lifeguard: 1 year (Preferred)
License/Certification:
- First Aid Certification (Required)
- CPR with AED Certification (Required)
- Lifeguard Certification (Required)
