POSITION PURPOSE:

The City of Birmingham, (EOE), is seeking qualified candidates for the seasonal position of Special Events Intern with the City's Birmingham Shopping District. This is an exciting opportunity for a student interested in learning more about special event management, including community and sponsor relations, to attend various relevant meetings, participate in the activation of numerous events, and contribute to the special events' timeline from start to finish, offering exciting hands-on experience.

The qualified candidate will perform event related functions, including but not limited to, set up, tear down, community/attendee relations and vendor and sponsor support. This position will require frequent interaction with vendors, sponsors, and members of the public.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This list is not to be treated as all inclusive.

Assisting with set up, tear down and other event-related activities including vendor, community and sponsor relations at the following events. Please note, time frames listed are approximate and may change.

  • June 6: Outdoor Movie Night, 5:30-9:30 p.m.
  • June 15: Farmers Market Strawberry Jamboree, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • July 11: Outdoor Movie Night, 5:30-9:30 p.m.
  • July 20: Farmers Market Super Farmer Day, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • July 26: Day On The Town, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
  • August 8: Outdoor Movie Night, 5:30-9:30 p.m.
  • August 10: Farmers Market Corn Festival, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • August 16: Birmingham Cruise Event, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Examples of duties:

  • Attend meetings with the BSD Board, internal stakeholders, external vendors, and various other partners.
  • Setting up canopies/tents and canopy weights, chairs and tables/picnic tables.
  • Distributing and maintaining trash boxes throughout the event area for the duration of the event, including general cleanup such as picking up trash and disposing of trash bags.
  • Utility set up such as water connection or electrical hookup.
  • Assisting vendors and patrons as needed.
  • Storing and locking up equipment after event.
  • Placing directional signs at major intersections and throughout event as needed.
  • Gathering data at events by tracking attendance, and soliciting and collecting survey responses.
  • Manning the Information Tent, answering questions and assisting vendors, sponsors and patrons.
  • Serve as a team lead for volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to provide great customer service to patrons, vendors, sponsors, etc.
  • Must be able to work the event dates listed above
  • Must be able to be reliable and prompt
  • Must be able to meet the physical and environmental requirements as follows

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current college student studying marketing, communications, hospitality, event management or related field
  • Experience in a customer service related field

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift up to 40lbs with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs
  • Must be able to frequently stand, walk, bend, twist, reach, kneel and squat
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying degrees and conditions of seasonal weather
  • Must be able to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions
  • Must be able to withstand noise changes in the public and outdoor environment
  • Must be able to transport between off-site locations
