JOB SUMMARY:
Police Officers are responsible for maintaining law and order, and protecting life and property, by responding to emergency calls and patrolling the City, enforcing criminal and traffic laws and investigating criminal activity. Employees in this job class are exposed to elements of personal danger, and officers must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise judgment in meeting emergency situations while staying with departmental policies and procedures. Police Officers require substantial knowledge of law enforcement methods and state legal codes in order to perform their primary duties. Police Officers receive work assignments and instructions from a Police Sergeant who reviews work methods and results through reports, inspections, and observation of results.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Compensation and benefits for the City of Birmingham are presented below.
Pay rate:
- Pay range: $28.78/hour ($59,862 annually) to $38.57/hour ($80,225 annual)
- Starting pay for new recruit: $28.78/hour.
- Starting pay for APOSTC certified officer: From $28.78/hour to $38.57/hour depending on experience.
- The City provides pay step progression through the above range at a rate of 5% per year, plus any additional cost of living increases pending budget approvals
- All Police Officer positions are eligible for overtime.
Pay enhancements:
- Educational pay enhancement: Candidates with a college degree are eligible for additional pay beyond the amounts presented above (Associate’s degree 5%; Bachelor’s degree 10%)
- Recruitment/Sign-on Bonus*: $10,000
- Annual Retention Payment*: $10,000
- Relocation Payment*: $5,000 (to be eligible applicant must reside >80 miles from Birmingham at the time of application and must relocate within Birmingham City limits)
Paid leave:
- 8 hours paid vacation leave accrued each month
- 8 hours sick accrued each month
- 8 hours mental health observance leave provided each month
* Note: Pay enhancement is based on current fiscal year approved budget and is not guaranteed to be provided beyond the current fiscal year.
