Description
The City is currently in the process of implementing a new salary structure. Depending on the progress of this implementation, the salary offered to the selected candidate may be higher than the amount currently posted. However, the candidate will not be offered a salary lower than the posted amount for this position.
Engages in crisis intervention and refers those experiencing mental health issues, substance use disorder, homelessness, and traumatic events to appropriate resources and/or agency. Trains Department personnel and community members on topics and available resources related to the previous aforementioned issues.
Duties

Essential (primary)
Accompanies officers to death scenes that could be the result of criminal or non-criminal circumstances and/or to provide death notifications to families or other survivors.
For those assigned to the Dispatch Center, screen and receive calls from those experiencing mental health and/or substance use issues in an effort to immediately establish a connection with care providers and begin coordinating solutions.
Provides individual counseling, debriefing sessions, and/or other available resources to Department personnel who are exposed to traumatic events or who otherwise find themselves in need of services.
Inputs information into the Department’s CAD/RMS system as well as the software program designated for use by the Department Social Workers to document interactions with clients.
Identifies trends in the problems individuals’ face that impact the community and presents recommendations on how to solve those problems and/or alleviate the impact.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his or her designee.
Job Requirements
Master’s in Social Work or related field, required. Required to meet educational eligibility requirements for state licensure, although license is not required.
Knowledge of community agencies and how to access the services that they provide.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work varying hours and to be on call.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when necessary and appropriate.
Ability to work in stressful or emotionally-charged situations where individuals may be experiencing crisis or exhibiting erratic behavior. Experience in providing crisis intervention techniques and services is preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Difficulty of Work and Personal Work Relationship
Incumbent performs duties in a modern office environment or in the field under possible adverse weather conditions, stressful situations involving individuals in crisis, and outdoor environments that may be considered challenging to some. Overall physical demands should be considered minimal.
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with Department personnel, representatives of various social service agencies, targeted at-risk populations being served and the general public. Work within the community may involve educating or speaking as a subject matter expert on local issues being addressed and the services being provided. Contact within and outside the Department should be done with the objective of soliciting support for the Department’s efforts in addressing issues confronting the community.
