What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Building Inspector IV position at City of Bloomington?
Inspectors will be responsible for inspecting construction and alteration of multifamily residential, commercial and industrial structures. This position also assists with plan reviews. General tasks include responding to questions from contractors and general public on building codes and ordinances. Position is responsible for assisting residential and multidiscipline inspectors when called upon. Work is performed within the rules, regulations, procedures and ordinances governing the activities of the Building Safety Division and the Community Development Department.

- Provide enforcement and information on City building codes and ordinances, permits requirements and permit fees.
- Assist with examination of plans and serve as back up to Building Official with plan review.
- Conduct inspections of multifamily residential, commercial and industrial occupancies; check for compliance with municipal and state building codes and ordinances; secure compliance or institute legal action if necessary.
- Facilitate Interdepartmental communication.
- Serves as back up inspector to residential and multidiscipline inspectors if and as needed.
Education/Experience: Graduation from High School or equivalent, supplemented by two years of related college level course work, or completion of an apprenticeship in construction trades, or any equivalent combination of experience and training in construction management, architecture, or engineering which would provide the necessary knowledge, ability and skill. Hands on experience in inspection or the construction trades.
Certificate or Licenses:
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Within 12 months of hire, obtain certifications for the International Code Council’s Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Energy Inspector, and Building Plans Examiner.

- Work is generally performed within an office and indoor environment, but with routine inspections conducted outside of the office setting. Exterior inspection activities may take place in dusty, moist or humid conditions and in a range of temperatures. Work requires driving to other locations in the City and occasionally to other locations around the state for meetings and training, as well as visits to outdoor sites.
- The essential functions of this job require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects of light weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private or commercial transportation and to hear and verbally communicate to exchange information.
