What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Inspector position at City of Bloomington?
The Electrical inspector will be primarily focused on reviewing electrical plans and conducting electrical inspections which ensure that electrical work is performed and completed consistent with the adopted electrical code requirements, ensuring the practical safeguarding of persons and property from electrical hazards.

- Review permit applications, plans, specifications, and engineering calculations to ensure they meet the electrical code for the purpose of securing permits
- Build functional and technical knowledge of all Building & Inspection software with an objective of maintaining procedures
- Interpret and explain City ordinances and state codes to homeowners, realtors, architects, engineers, contractors, and developers in person, over the phone and via email correspondence
- Perform routine or specialized inspections for housing code compliance
- Inform supervisor promptly of matters which are important to the City's interests or the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents
- Maintain and expand electrical code knowledge and skills with continuing education
- Verify contractor licensing is within state code compliance for permit and plan issuance
- Review and recommend amendments to ordinances and codes
- Create and maintain logs and records
- Assist Division Manager in training employees
- Perform other duties as apparent or assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Demonstrates mechanical aptitude and ability to understand plans
- Demonstrates knowledge of the National Electrical Code and inspection procedures
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to utilize computer programs used within the Building & Inspection division
- Ability to ensure work is completed on schedule, work includes inspections, plan review and related tasks
- Ability to review plans for compliance with the electrical code
- Written communication is clear, concise, and accurate
- Installations inspected consistently conform to code.
- Promptly identifies and corrects violations and complaints
- Public communication is responsive, considerate and respects needs for confidentiality
- Maintains effective work relationships with supervisor, coworkers, architects, engineers, contractors, and developers
- Promptly responds to complaints and questions regarding program areas
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to understand construction and site plans
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Electrical trade experience, as a MN State Class A Journeyworker or MN State Class A Master Electrician
- Current MN State Class A Journeyworker or MN State Class A Master Electrician
- Valid driver's license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- IAEI certified electrical inspector
- MN Limited Building Official license
- Two years of electrical inspection experience
- Five years of electrical trade experience, as a MN State Class A Journeyworker or MN State Class A Master Electrician
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
This position does not supervise others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Pass and maintain Time of Sale inspection exam to become a certified TOS inspector within first 90 days of employment.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $43.39 – $47.84 Hourly
2025 Full Salary Range: $43.39 – $53.85 Hourly
Full-Time; Non-Exempt; AFSCME Union; Benefits Eligible per Union Contract
