What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Inspector IV position at City of Bloomington?
To conduct fire inspections involving existing buildings as well as other related fire prevention duties. Tasks include the preparation of correspondence and inspection reports, handling of complaints and maintenance of records related to inspections and public education tasks.
Work includes the inspection of existing buildings and participation in various fire prevention programs. Work is performed within the rules, procedures and ordinances governing the activities of the fire prevention program.
The Fire Inspector may be called upon to do any of the following: (These examples may not include all of the tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor do they cover all of the specific duties which may be required.)
- Inspect and reinspect all required occupancies; check for compliance with municipal and state codes and ordinances that apply to fire hazards and fire protection equipment; secure compliance or institute legal action if necessary.
- Evaluate building and fire safety components, i.e. fire stops, draft curtains, fire walls, etc. for compliance with codes.
- Meet with owners and occupants to explain violations, hazards and options for correcting problems.
- Distribute educational material to a variety of groups and participate in Fire Education programs.
- Investigate complaints of hazardous conditions and initiate action to secure correction.
- Assist and provide coverage for other Inspector positions as needed.
Certificates/Licenses:
- Possession of a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Within 12 months of hire, obtain certifications for the International Code Council’s Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector, and OSFM Training to inspect pyrotechnic displays.
Education/Experience:
- Degree in Safety or Industrial Technology or any equivalent combination of training and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge, abilities and skills needed to perform successfully.

Pay: $34.20 - $37.71 per hour
