JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
The public works laborer performs tasks involving physical labor jobs around the city. This position must have the ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools to perform duties including shoveling, sweeping, raking, mechanical assistance, lifting, pushing, and pulling of various objects. This position must have the ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions and other duties as assigned per supervisor. A CDL license will be an asset to the job.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor.
- Usage of various handheld tools, shovels, weedeaters, and mowing equipment.
- Physical ability to perform garbage pick-up, mow, trim, leaf removal, snow removal, and other general labor duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Physical ability to operate equipment under extreme temperatures and for extended hours of time.
- Help to maintain a clean job site: picks up all tools and equipment and secures job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
- Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
- Maintain regular attendance
- Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary basis as needed.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must pass drug screen and criminal background check.
- Must partner with other city employees as instructed by department manager to ensure daily schedules are met.
- Attendance required according to attendance policy to ensure crew ability to operate at a normal efficiency level.
- Initiative to perform/assist with other positions for job completions.
- Attitude/cooperation: always maintain courteous and professional manner with co-workers and the general public.
- Ability to occasionally work various times during day, night, or weekend hours at various locations.
- Ability to follow instructions of supervisor/facility manager in order to adhere to company policies and safety guidelines.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to extreme weather, noise, and moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week. This position could require longer hours and weekend work.
Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred but not required. A CDL license will be given special consideration.
Other Requirements
- Proof of citizenship and/or eligibility to legally work in the United States.
- Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attire.
- Maintain regular attendance.
