Job Description:
The Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for Assisting in the control and extinguishing of fires, conduct search and rescue missions, respond to medical and fire emergencies, administer emergency medical treatment by providing definitive care at the scene of an accident or illness, protecting life and property.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responds to fires, fire alarms, emergency medical calls and other emergency calls; operates firefighting equipment and apparatus;
- Performs rescue or rescue support functions at scenes requiring technical rescue, such as water/Swiftwater rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, vehicle extrication, vertical rescue, building collapse, or rescue from other types of entrapment;
- Performs rescue and emergency care at hazardous materials scenes, disasters, mass casualty situations, or where weapons of mass destruction have been used or may be present, securing and containing the scene as necessary;
- Operate emergency medical and rescue equipment, providing life support care to ill and injured individuals, up to specific certified skill level;
- Performs fire suppression functions including rescue, deploy and operate hose lines, ventilate roofs, perform salvage work after fires, and other related tasks associated with fire suppression; to include structure, wildland, and vehicle fires;
- Inspect, clean, and maintain apparatus, equipment, quarters, and grounds;
- Conduct pre-incident evaluations and develop plans for emergency response to those properties;
- Participates in and occasionally conduct fire and Basic EMS training classes and drills;
Other Duties:
- Serves as essential emergency personnel and must respond when required;
- Conduct station tours and other lectures/demonstrations;
- May serve in a leadership role as needed;
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of this position; and
Qualifications:
- Education & Training; High School diploma or GED equivalent is required. Training in Firefighting & EMS; Incident Command (ICS); Hazardous Materials (HM; Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and Emergency Management (EM) response; Special Rescue
- Knowledge of; the human body and its systems, applicable traffic laws, medic-legal aspects for this position and clients’ rights; safety and security procedures to allow duties to be carried out in hostile environments; technical materials on equipment operation, fire suppression, rescue, EMS, hazardous materials, and fire prevention; departmental policies and procedures.
- Skill/Ability to; identify, secure and perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion while caring for critically ill and injured people; study maps to learn the district assigned as necessary; converse fluently in and read English; read, write and understand written and verbal instructions, reports, documents and plans; use of good judgment and coordinate safe and cooperative work environment; work effectively as a team member; maintain good working relationship with co-workers and supervisors; ability to drive and operate fire apparatus to include operation of pump, ladder and assigned equipment; work a flexible schedule, to include evening hours, weekends and holidays; must have the ability to report to work on time, regularly and to remain on duty for the duration of the workday;
- Safety/Physical Requirements; ability to maintain physical condition for strenuous physical efforts including safely standing, walking, bending, crawling, kneeling, stooping in awkward positions; move/lifting heavy objects up to 100 lbs. Climb ladders and work at considerable height while supported by ladders or ropes; work in close/confined spaces safely; wear/use self-contained breathing apparatus and/or air purifying respirators and other personal protective and chemical protective equipment as required; use and maintain safety equipment as required by departmental regulations.
- Certifications & Licenses Requirements; Basic Firefighters Certificate by TCFP; Basic Emergency Medical Training (EMT) by TDSHS; Swift Water I; Wildland 130-190; Hazard Materials Awareness. Appropriate valid Texas Driver’s License; a Class B commercial vehicle operator’s license or a Class B exempt minimum, before the completion of the probationary period.
