Summary Statement

The Electrical Inspector performs skilled inspections to verify that approved plans, installed electrical wiring, systems, and equipment comply with safety requirements. This position works under immediate/direct supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects new and existing electrical wiring and installations in buildings and structures of any size or height to determine that installations conform to approved plans and applicable national electrical codes. Verifies that electrical equipment has the appropriate labeling and listings for the application. Performs on-site reviews of electrical plans and diagrams. Performs limited erosion and sediment control inspections. Handles moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Writes correction notices and requires corrections of deficiencies discovered in electrical wiring and installations. Monitors the inspection area for work performed without permits, proper occupancy approval or dangerous conditions. Issues notices of violation, including stop-work orders, citations and civil penalties where unsafe or illegal conditions exist. Performs "aging" inspections of permitted work to verify progress on projects with little documented activity.
  • Coordinates power termination due to severe code and life safety violations with local utilities, supervisor and planning and development services staff members. Verifies the proper licensing of electrical contractors and journey-level workers. Responds to complaints from tenants, homeowners and others about possible substandard housing conditions due to electrical code violations.
  • Advises electrical contractors and homeowners on various installation problems relating to electrical codes. Provides information on the electrical code and other related regulatory requirements. Meets regularly with other electrical inspectors to develop policies and procedures to ensure uniformity of inspection.
  • Coordinates activities with other departments and inspection staff by recording inspection results in the city's database. Works with other inspectors to coordinate inspection coverage of the city and ensure that electrical work is inspected and approved before issuing a certificate of occupancy, completion or other final approval. Demonstrates continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality, seamless customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as a practicing journey-level electrician.

Knowledge of:

  • the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a variety of residential, commercial and industrial electrical installations and appliances
  • the National Electric Code and local ordinances
  • International Code Council electrical inspection certification
  • computer usage, including related software
  • general customer service techniques.

    Ability to:
  • detect and locate defective electrical wiring in construction and ascertain the state of construction and installation
  • read, understand and apply construction and wiring blueprints, specifications, drawings and diagrams
  • check and calibrate electrical test instruments
  • deal constructively with conflict and communicate effectively with people who are angry, frustrated or confused
  • exercise technical judgment based on trade and technical experience
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

    Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    Prior experience as a certified Electrical Inspector licensed by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) or the International Code Council (ICC).

    Licensing And Other Requirements


Valid state-issued driver's license.

Have or obtain within six months of employment the Electrical Inspector certification by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) and the Erosion and Sediment Control Responsible Person's Certification.

Electrical journey level license.

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.Construction sites at all stages of completion, heavy equipment, falling hazards, open excavation and temporary safety installations.
