Work on advanced mechanical systems in a critical industry! We’re looking for an experienced mechanic to perform journey-level maintenance on complex equipment in advanced water renewal (wastewater treatment) facilities and other public works utilities. In this role, you’ll take the lead on complex repairs and projects, troubleshoot industrial equipment, and drive critical projects with autonomy.

Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff, is capable of performing all duties of a Industrial Mechanic - PW, and provides leadership, coaching , and/or mentoring to a subordinate group, as needed.

Performs advanced corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance, repair, replacement, installation and operation of wastewater processing equipment. Performs complex mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, rebuilding, installation, pipe fitting, plumbing, welding and fabrication. Operates light, medium and heavy hand, pneumatic and electric tools, chain pull hoists, power saws, forklifts, backhoes, skidsteers, telehandlers and overhead cranes, Drives vacuum trucks, semi-trucks and dump trucks. 

Performs all duties of a PW Industrial Mechanic level I, in addition to providing mentoring and team coordination; performs more complex, skilled tasks, and assists others as required.

Performs advanced design and fabrication of complex mechanical systems, and welds and cuts parts and accessories utilizing welders, lathes, torches, plasma cutters and a wide array of hand and power tools. Operates and maintains advanced shop fabrication tools, lathes, presses and milling machines. Works with all types of metals, wood, fiberglass and plastic materials. 

Utilizes computer programs to enter data and create maintenance records to ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws. Reads, interprets and applies relevant OSHA regulations and guidelines.

Reads and interprets blueprints and technical manuals to research and order parts and equipment. Reviews design documents, industry publications and equipment specifications to advise and make recommendations on equipment selection. Assists in evaluating and setting maintenance standards and safety procedures. Assists in identifying maintenance needs and coordinating complex maintenance projects.

Provides training and instruction to other staff on the maintenance, operation and safety procedures of industrial wastewater equipment and processes. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work environment. 

Reports to facilities in the case of an emergency to assess the situation and to perform repairs or correctives to get the plant back online and operating in a timely manner before breaking permits.

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 
  • 4 years of experience conducting journey-level industrial maintenance and mechanical work, troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, installing and pipe fitting, or
  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge of:
  • appropriate use of lock out/tag out safety procedures; 
  • relevant occupational hazards and standard safety precautions, including personal protection equipment and road safety; 
  • industrial pumps equipment, influent screenings equipment; 
  • methane gas compressors and filtration systems; 
  • operating semi-trucks, vacuum trucks and dump trucks; 
  • inspections and maintenance of UV disinfection systems; 
  • design input and implication of systems; 
  • gas monitoring for confined space work; 
  • high and low voltage electrical systems; 
  • heat loop maintenance and repair; 
  • pipe fitting, welding and fabricating practices; 
  • shop geometry; 
  • engines, pumps, valves, compressors, generators, boilers, electrical circuits and process instrumentation; and
  • computer usage including related software.

Ability to:
  • safely operate heavy machinery and related equipment; 
  • operate mills, lathes, MIG, and TIG welders and plasma cutters; 
  • read, interpret and apply relevant OSHA regulations and guidelines, blueprints and technical manuals; 
  • operate computer and basic programs; 
  • learn and utilize new computer programs; 
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and 
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
6 years of experience in an industrial plant or four years of experience in wastewater treatment or other related industrial facility.

Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I license.

Four years of experience in welding, metal fabrication, pipefitting and/or HVAC.

Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver’s license.

Ability to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I or Operator-in-Training (OIT) license within six months of meeting Idaho Bureau of Occupational License eligibility requirements.

First Aid, CPR and AED certificate.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.Additional physical efforts include: performing work on equipment that can only be reached from step ladders, extension ladders and and lift equipment..

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work on stairs and uneven surfaces, near open tanks and ditches, in industrial areas; are exposed to hydraulic and vehicle hazards, and insects and atmospheric hazards; are subject to slip hazards caused from ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces. Exposure to sewage, methane, hydrogen sulfide and other possible toxic gases and substances.
This position works: Shift work, rotating on-call schedule, and reports to the facility in times or emergencies, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required. Work may be performed/assigned at any of the city's public works' facilities. May work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.
