The City of Boise Fire Department is seeking a Wildland Fuels Technician for a temporary, seasonal position lasting approximately four (4) months. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) role working mainly on weekdays with the potential to work some evenings or weekends depending on the needs of the Wildfire Mitigation Team. This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts in the Boise area.

The Wildland Fuels Technician will be assigned to work directly with the City of Boise Wildfire Mitigation Team (WMT). This position will engage primarily in field work, with some office work activities. For office work, a workspace with computer access and email will be provided.Duties include: Fuel reduction activities for multiple wildfire mitigation projects; Volunteer coordination; Reseeding of native grasses and forbs, Installing interpretive signs, Maintaining Firewise landscaping demonstration sites, Conducting wildfire home safety assessments, Neighborhood chipping program (e.g. driving truck with chipper and running chipper) Piling woody debris; Slope mowing and sawyer work (e.g. limbing up trees, removal of invasive trees, etc.); Cut and drag brush; feed the woodchipper; prune trees and shrubs; sweep and rake leaf litter, pine needles, and woody debris; Provide logistical support and communicate with the public in the event of a wildfire; Tree marking and forest management work; Maintain station landscaping demonstration areas (pruning, deadheading, weeding); Provide basic maintenance; properly and safely use assigned vehicles, forestry equipment, and power tools; Provide clerical support and assist with logistics.

Two years of post-secondary education in Natural Resources, Fire Ecology, Wildland Fire Conservation, Biology, Botany, Weed Science, or related field.
Must be 19 years of age and older
Working knowledge or in the process of learning about native vegetation, GIS, fire ecology, dryland restoration, and land management.
Abilities: Good oral and written communication skills; ability to safely operate equipment; safely operate and maintain small hand tools and power equipment such as leaf blowers, brush cutters, chainsaws, trimmers, pruners, and mowers; safely operate assigned City vehicles, including trucks with trailers; follow oral and written directions and work as part of a crew, and/or work independently; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Good working knowledge of modern office technology, Microsoft Word and Excel, and safety programs.
Candidates must be able to prioritize workloads and schedule the necessary time needed to complete each item by the identified deadline.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Fire Ecology, Wildland Fire, Conservation, Biology, Botany, Weed Science, or related fields.
Idaho State Pesticide Applicator’s License
Licensing And Other Requirements
Valid state-issued driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.
