General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work impounding and containing stray or nuisance domestic and wild animals; and enforcing all City ordinances related to animal control and order among the City's domestic animal population. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Animal Control Officer.

Essential Functions

• Handle cats and/or dogs and occasionally other animals of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately
• Follow and maintain knowledge of organization cleaning, sanitation, and disease prevention protocols to provide a safe, clean environment for all
• Provide all animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys and other mental stimulation and enrichment, social interaction with humans and, where appropriate, members of their own species
• Maintain excellent knowledge of all shelter standard medical procedures, vaccines, preventatives, and common diseases and their symptoms, transmission, prevention
• Monitor physical and behavioral health of animals and rapidly identify any health issues and report to staff or supervisor
• Maintains complete records on all animals impounded, returned to owners, transferred to shelter partners, and euthanized.
• Transports adoptable animals not claimed by an owner to shelter partners.
• Keeps updated records of the number of animals impounded, returned, transferred, and euthanized.
• Maintains website page answering questions and writing comments; updates with pictures and current information regarding all animals impounded.
• Assists other staff with various tasks such as answering phones, retrieving equipment, materials, and supplies; helps with various activities related to public events.
• Maintains a working relationship with veterinarian partners and Bonner Animal Rescue.
• Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of mathematics; strong technical aptitude; excellent public relations, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to work with animals; ability and willingness to learn about animal control methods; ability to learn the proper and safe operation of department vehicles, and other animal capture equipment; ability to establish successful working relationships with entities, employees, City officials, businesses, and the public; ability to use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision making; ability to understand and anticipate problems, and to interpret written instructions, maps, manuals, and reports; ability to be self- directed and self-motivated in performance of required duties, and proactive in keeping informed of new techniques, policies and procedures related to job requirements; ability to demonstrate leadership, management, and technical skills through effective collaboration, team resources, progressive decision making, and personal responsibility; ability to be committed to the mission, vision, and strategic direction of the City of Bonner Springs; ability to obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

• Complete animal behavior and handling training within 3 months of employment.
• Complete Fear Free Shelter Certification within 3 months of employment.
• Valid driver's license.
