General Definition of Work

Under supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the Summer Maintenance Worker is a non-exempt seasonal position under FLSA, responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the City’s parks and recreation facilities. The position operates departmental equipment, and performs unskilled duties in the maintenance of certain City buildings and grounds. The employee must possess some knowledge in maintaining grounds and the operation of lawn care equipment. The employee must have a high level of physical energy.

Essential Functions

• Perform grounds keeping duties including mowing, weeding, trimming, debris removal, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, watering, removing, replacing or planting trees and other flora, etc.
• Help assess condition of parks and parks facilities on regular basis through physical inspection and address problems as assigned or as needed.
• Operate mowers, weed trimmers, and other equipment.
• Prepare ball fields for play (chalking, drag, line, rake, etc.)
• Help maintain, repair, relocate and install play and recreational equipment.
• Help maintain and service department equipment.
• Help maintain interior and exterior of assigned buildings, including walls, ceilings, roofs, walkways, gutters, windows, doors, steps, lighting, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, etc.
• Help maintain a clear record of maintenance and repair activities.
• Haul trash and clean and re-supply restrooms.
• Perform janitorial duties, minor plumbing repairs, and light carpentry.
• Maintain and repair baseball diamonds and associated structures.
• Rotate weekend Shelter Rental responsibilities
• Regular and punctual attendance.
• Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
• Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.
• Correct and timely completion of time reporting sheets.

Marginal Functions

• Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.
• Assist other departments and perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Candidates will be given top consideration if they have the following: a good knowledge of equipment and materials used in simple building and grounds maintenance, and a working knowledge of mathematics, and repairs; Ability to operate hand tools, mowers, trimmers, and other department equipment; Ability to understand and anticipate problems, maintain safety, interpret and act upon written and verbal instructions. This employee should have the ability to read and interpret written instructions, and have effective verbal and written communication skills. The ability and willingness to learn about equipment maintenance, carpentry, mechanics, and grounds keeping techniques is required.
 

Problem Solving
Some independent problem solving may occur related to equipment malfunctions. Serious problems are reported to and discussed with the Maintenance Supervisor.
 

Decision Making
Occasional independent decision making is involved.
 

Supervision
This employee works under close supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor and limited supervision from the full-time Maintenance Worker.
 

Financial Accountability
This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment.
 

Personal Relations
Daily contact with the co-workers and supervisory personnel, and occasional contact with the general public.

Working Conditions
Adverse working conditions exist within this position; frequent exposure to all types of weather conditions and the possibility of exposure to various chemicals.
 

Education and Experience
No education is required. Must be able to read and do simple math.
 

Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
 

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license.

Salary : $13 - $16
