Hiring for several positions in the Public Works Department starting from April 2025Seasonal Workers in our busy Public Works Operations divisions learn new skills, work as part of a team and assist Maintenance Workers during the busiest time of the year. Not only will you learn new skills, but you will walk away from a job with the satisfaction of knowing you were part of a needed project to help the community.These temporary positions are scheduled to work throughout the spring and/or summer months for up to four (4) months. Work schedule will be determined by each division supervisor. The Parks division works a variety of schedules to include some nights and weekends and those working in the other divisions may include rare nights and weekend work.Multiple positions are available in the Streets/Storm, Sewer, Water, and Parks divisions. General PurposePerforms a variety of routine duties and responsibilities intended to assist in maintaining the diverse City's facilities for the benefit of the City and its citizens.Supervision ReceivedWorks under the general supervision of the assigned Crew Lead and Assistant Superintendent of Public Works.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Clears litter/garbage, cleans buildings, and completes minor building repairs.Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools before and after use.Mows grass, weed, eats, edges, rakes leaves and clears debris and litter from walks, fields, streets, storm ponds, parking lots, courts and other facilities.Digs ditches and refills them when work is completed, restoring site to its original or better condition.Safely operates and/or drives various tools, motor vehicles, equipment and machinery.Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew.Other: Clearing vegetation around meter boxes, fire hydrants, and valve markers.Painting fire hydrants Assisting with the meter replacement programDigging up metersAssisting with the installation of metersPeripheral DutiesMay perform flagging duties if certified. Performs flagging functions in work zones; ensures a safe working environment according to established safety guidelines.

Special RequirementsValid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance. Must be 18 years of age or older.Tools and Equipment UsedPickups or motor vehicle, air compressors, concrete saws, chain saws, rakes, shovels, mowers, blowers, leaf machines, hand tools, chippers, small power equipment, pressure washers, personal protection equipment, and various other tools and equipment.Preferred QualificationsFlagger certification.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Frequently works on uneven and steep surfaces that are often wet and slippery.Physical ability to walk, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and must be able to work in confined spaces. Employee must have the physical strength and ability to sufficiently perform manual labor for extended periods of time under dirty and uncomfortable situations. Ability required to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 51 pounds repeatedly in the normal course of duties.Work EnvironmentThe work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires heavy physical labor. Work may be in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
