Do you love sports? Do you have experience officiating sports or are a player for various sports? Put your love of the game to work as a Youth Sport Official and help youth in our community engage in a safe, organized, and fun activities at every sports event!

Officiants participate at sporting events, games, or competitions to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed. We are looking for team players who are reliable and organized, care about their work, and strive for continuous improvement. Observes and officiates based on the rules and regulations of the various sports. 
 
Hours of work will vary depending upon the sporting game schedule and 
will include nights and weekends.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of duties to officiate youth sports through the Recreation Program.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the assigned Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager.


  • Observe players and regulate the play of the sports events.
  • Applies appropriate penalties to those that break the rules and regulations of the sporting event. Makes decisions and resolves disputes.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing agency (City and school district) rules and policies.
  • Communicates with assigned Recreation Coordinator to coordinate plans or resolve problems and records or maintains data.
  • Upholds City, district and building policies and follows administrative procedures.
  • Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is: suitable for safe operations; maintained in an attractive and clean condition; and identifies necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions and other areas of concern. Immediately reports issues to supervisor.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Reports to work with regular and reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Must be able to take criticism from athletes, coaches, and fans and react appropriately.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 14 years of age or older (minors must have parent/school authorization form to work); and
  • Demonstrated experience with assigned sport.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification is required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of 
    • Assigned sports' rules and regulations.
    • Rules of play standard to the sport and as modified by the Recreation Program.
    • Listening and feedback techniques.
  • Ability to 
    • Attend all assigned games.
    • Arrive to game location on time and appropriately attired.
    • Concentrate in a situation with many possible distractions.
    • Make decisions quickly, fairly, and resolve disputes between teams.
    • Act swiftly in an emergency.
    • Sufficiently supervise and interact with children and enforce safety standards.
    • Work evening, weekends and irregular hours learn new procedures quickly.
    • Be flexible and adaptable.
    • Speak in a clear voice using proper English grammar and syntax.
    • Presents a professional demeanor that includes being courteous, patient and providing efficient customer service.
    • Take direction from supervisor and carry out oral and written instructions.
    • Communicate in a responsive and responsible manner.
    • Maintain accurate records.
    • Establish effective working relationships with the general public, coworkers, vendors, other agencies, officials and citizens.
  • A willingness to expend extra effort to help the public find answers or information relative to their inquiry or complaint.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Prior experience officiating and working with youth is highly desired. Must have a valid picture identification card or a valid WA State Driver's License.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Various sports equipment used in recreation programs; record keeping programs.

Physical Demands
  • Walk and run short distances for up to an hour at a time. 
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds on occasion.
Work Environment
  • Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. 
  • The employee may be exposed to wet, cold, hot, and/or humid conditions. 
  • Noise levels will vary by sport and may be loud at times.
