Position Overview

The Police Officer I has already obtained a peace officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and serves as an essential frontline law enforcement officer within the Borger Police Department, responsible for enforcing laws, maintaining public safety, and providing assistance to residents and visitors. Operating under the supervision of a Shift Sergeant, the Police Officer I patrols assigned areas, responds to calls for service, conducts investigations, and takes proactive measures to prevent crime and disorder. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Patrol Operations: Conduct routine patrols of assigned areas, including residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and public spaces, to deter criminal activity, enforce laws, and maintain order.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to calls for service, emergencies, and incidents requiring police intervention, taking appropriate action to protect life and property and ensure public safety.
  • Traffic Enforcement: Enforce traffic laws and regulations by monitoring vehicular and pedestrian traffic, issuing citations and warnings for violations, investigating traffic accidents, and assisting motorists as needed.
  • Crime Prevention: Take proactive measures to prevent crime and disorder, such as conducting surveillance, engaging in community policing activities, and participating in crime prevention initiatives and outreach efforts.
  • Investigations: Conduct preliminary investigations into criminal activities, disturbances, and other incidents, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and documenting findings in accordance with departmental procedures and legal requirements.
  • Report Writing: Prepare accurate and detailed reports, documentation, and affidavits related to patrol activities, incidents, arrests, and investigations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Public Assistance: Provide assistance and support to residents, business owners, and visitors, addressing concerns, providing information, and offering resources to promote public safety and well-being.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with community members through positive interactions, public events, and outreach initiatives, fostering trust, cooperation, and collaboration between law enforcement and the community.
  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and certification programs to enhance skills, knowledge, and job performance in areas such as law enforcement techniques, firearms proficiency, and cultural competency.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain assigned police equipment, vehicles, and firearms in clean, operational condition, conducting regular inspections, repairs, and maintenance as needed to ensure readiness and safety.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework or a degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
  • Completion of a certified police academy program and certification as a Texas Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is required.
  • Valid Texas driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to meet departmental driving standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Physical fitness and agility to perform essential job functions, including prolonged standing, walking, running, and occasional lifting or carrying of heavy objects.
