What are the responsibilities and job description for the Rule 9 Prosecutor position at City of Bothell, WA?
The City of Bothell Prosecutor's Office is an in-house office which serves the needs of the City in all matters regarding criminal prosecution and forfeitures.
Students will be involved at every step of the criminal process including, but not limited to, reviewing officer reports; making charging decisions; extending offers for resolving cases; preparing legal documents for submission to the Court; independently running the arraignment, review, and traffic infraction calendars; negotiating plea agreements with defense counsel; and assisting the prosecutor during the pretrial conferences.
As the year progresses, students will be expected to prepare briefing for, and participate in, the arguing of motions. Students will also be expected to conduct jury/bench trials. Further, if the opportunity arises, students will participate in the writing and arguing of any appeals filed in King County Superior Court; the Court of Appeals, Division I; and/or the Supreme Court of Washington.
This internship provides students an excellent opportunity to practice their legal writing skills, to gain familiarity with the rules of criminal procedure and evidence, and to learn how to interact professionally with other attorneys.
Requirements:
Applicant must be (1) Rule 9 eligible through the Washington State Bar Association and (2) eligible for work study funding (if work study funds are made available by the Legislature). Hours may be limited in order to maximize any available work study funds, but, generally, the successful applicant will be expected to work approximately 30 hours/week during the summer and part time during the following school year. The expectation is a year-long commitment (June 2020 – end of April, 2021). Evidence, Legal Writing II, and Crim Pro are preferred, but not required.
