A potential pathway to a career Firefighter position with the City of Boulder City is through the Fire Cadet program. This program will require the commitment of at least six-months. This academy will be held for 16-19 weeks on Saturdays, and last approximately twelve to fourteen hours each day. The remainder of the cadet training will consist of on-the-job training. The individual will be assigned to work 12- or 24-hour shifts during the six-month period. Additional group Saturday's sessions occurring at the end of the training period or as needed for state testing. As a Fire Cadet, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in our community, while also focusing on your educational, physical fitness, personal, and professional development.This apprentice-style program (proficiency school) is designed to prepare Cadets for a Reserve Firefighter with the City of Boulder City Fire Department. Duties include training, administrative functions, as well as firehouse duties. Fire Cadets will be given instruction needed to successfully pass the Nevada State Firefighter I, Hazmat Awareness, and Hazmat Operations testing. Fire Cadets will also receive basic wildland firefighting training. The assignments are widely varied so that the Fire Cadet will gain a broad range of operational and administrative experience. Fire Cadets are required to meet established program criteria to complete a prescribed course of curriculum and physical fitness training prior to being considered for appointment to a part-time Reserve Firefighter position.Upon completion of the Boulder City Fire Department Cadet Program and passing scores on the Nevada State Firefighter I, Hazmat Awareness, & Hazmat Operations tests, Cadets will be qualified to participate in the recruitment of part-time Reserve Firefighter positions. Preference is given to existing Reserve Firefighters when filling full-time firefighter positions with the Boulder City Fire Department.

Complete fire academy in preparation for future Reserve Firefighter duties.Lift, carry and operate heavy tools and equipment.Learn to perform maintenance of department equipment, buildings, and grounds.Learn administrative and clerical duties such as completing departmental paperwork.Answer and direct phone calls.Learn to perform general housekeeping duties.Participate at safety education, community events.Participate assisting with special projects as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and other characteristics: Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population, in-person and via telephone.Excellent customer-service skillsAbility to take direction from supervisors.Ability to complete the required firefighting educational and other training programs.Ability to complete the required strength and conditioning physical fitness programs.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds unassisted.Physical Activities Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Particularly for sustained periods of time. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound. Perceiving or detecting the odor or scent of something. Ability to detect the odor or scent of something and make fine distinctions in smell. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.Mental Activities Upholding ethical standards and practices. Making decisions that align with City’s values and ethics. Active listening and articulating thoughts clearly.Visual Acuity The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment; and required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes. The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.Working Conditions The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals, walking and working on slippery and uneven surfaces. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dust, gases, or poor ventilation. The worker is required to wear a respirator and will be required to remove facial hair. The worker frequently is in close quarters, narrow aisles, passageways and crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. The worker is exposed to infectious diseases or other possible infectious materials. Exposed to blood. Exposed to fecal matter. Exposed to OPIM.
