Position Summary

The Bozeman Public Library is now accepting applications for a Librarian I who will oversee the Librarys Creative Labs. The ideal candidate will have a passion for curiosity, practice a growth mindset, love teaching, and be handy at fixing things. This position plans creative programming and oversees the equipment and spaces of the Creative Labs, which constitute a makerspace, sound studio, and a demonstration kitchen. This position aligns with our mission to create opportunities that inspire curiosity, exploration and connection. The successful candidate will be required to earn a food protection manager certificate.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Explains library rules, circulation policies, and procedures to patrons;
  • Provides reference, readers advisory and directions services assistance to visitors of all ages in locating various materials throughout the library, including interviewing patrons to determine individual needs, referring patrons to other community resources and libraries, demonstrating the use of the automated catalog, self-check, electronic resources, and Internet services,
  • Provides instruction to visitors in the use of all technology resources including the library computer catalog, Internet resources, public computers and printers, computer games, microfilm / microfiche reader and printer, and copy machines, scanners, fax machines, projectors, sound system, and other services;
  • Develops and evaluates the Librarys collection, by assessing the current library collection, recording patron requests and / or reference questions, utilizing review journals and other sources to select new materials,
  • Maintains the Librarys collection by ordering materials and weeding the collection on a regular basis;
  • Performs original cataloging of print and non-print materials to national standards as appropriate;
  • Searches, locates, evaluates, and / or transfers records from OCLC database to local system;
  • Performs catalog maintenance tasks such as correcting call numbers and deleting records of discarded materials, including weeding collections of damaged or outdated materials;
  • Performs circulation services including registering patrons for library services, processing new materials, collecting fines and fees, and processing overdue materials.
  • Provides updates for librarys web page, including evaluating and selecting resources for the web page, writing various bibliographies and newsletter articles per request;
  • Designs and evaluates motivational and instructional programs to inspire curiosity, exploration, and connection for all ages;
  • Develops partnerships with community groups to expand the Librarys capacity to meet the needs of its users;
  • Creates and designs various materials for print and digital to market library services including preparing, bibliographies, various reading lists and posters, coordinating displays, and graphics for social media posts;
  • Recommends changes or revisions in library policies, procedures, and goals, including identifying problem areas which need to be addressed, contributing suggestions, writing or rewriting procedures, recommending and justifying goals of the Library to the administration, and enforcing existing policies and procedures;
  • Coordinates designated volunteers;
  • May serve as the person in charge of the Library as instructed on designated shifts;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and other materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to patron, citizen and staff questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

  • Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Library, Information Science or a related field; and
  • Some (1-3 years) library operations experience;
  • Or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

  • Thorough knowledge of standard library functions, rules, policies, and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of library catalogs, indexes, reference materials, circulating and non-circulating collections, email, and audio-visual equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of specific Library materials and resources;
  • Thorough knowledge of print and electronic reference resources, and the ability to combine these in answering complex questions;
  • Thorough knowledge of local community resources, research, and other reference materials;
  • Thorough knowledge of the Internet and other electronic sources;
  • Thorough knowledge of current cataloging rules, tools, and practices as appropriate, including Dewey Decimal Classification, AACR2, Library of Congress subject headings, MARC, and OCLC as assigned;
  • Knowledge of recreational and educational needs of the community including trends, interests, and resources, and ability to use this information to determine library programming needs and ability to translate community needs and interests into effective library services and programs;
  • Knowledge of current trends in library services, literature, and other material for all ages;
  • Some knowledge of operational finance and budgeting;
  • Some knowledge of general issues and current events;
  • Ability to instruct and assist visitors of all ages through presentations, classes, and one-on-one help on a variety of topics;
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor computer problems and other equipment malfunctions;
  • Ability to use library equipment employed in all phases or functions of assigned duties, including basic computer operation, microfilm, microfiche, copy machine, and cash register;
  • Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons and staff;
  • Ability to effectively engage with visitors and partners through a variety of performative communication, including presentations, readings, storytelling, and singing;
  • Ability to cope with and handle angry, hostile, difficult, or disturbed persons;
  • Ability to solve problems using diplomatic resolution strategies;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and / or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • 75 FTE (30 hours per week)
  • A .75 FTE provides enrollment in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution, prorated vacation and sick time accruals, and medical, dental, and vision benefits with a 75% subsidy from the City.

  • 5 FTE (20 hours per week)
  • A .5 FTE provides enrollment in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution, prorated vacation and sick time accruals, and medical, dental, and vision benefits with a 50% subsidy from the City.
