Description
CLASS TITLE : Assistant Civil Engineer - Public Works Department
BASIC FUNCTION :
Under direction performs, coordinates and / or directs the design and construction of municipal public works projects; supervises engineering technicians and professional engineering firms under contract with the City of Brawley. This position differs mostly from the Associate Civil Engineer due to it does not require Registration as a Professional Engineers. This position reports to the Public Works Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : -
Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these abilities and knowledge would be :
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in civil engineering or related field and a minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible and varied experience involving design, construction, maintenance, or operation of public works projects and activities. This experience should show proven capabilities to work with professional and sub professional personnel.
Licenses / Certificates - Valid California class C driver's license. Possession of an Engineer In Training (EIT) certification is a plus but not required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for hours in front of a computer, in meetings, in a vehicle; the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; the employee is frequently required to reach forward, downward and upward with hands and arms; the employee is frequently required to talk on a one-to-one basis or over the telephone; the employee is frequently required to hear or listen to conversations on a one-to-one basis or over the telephone; the employee is frequently required to stand for hours and walk long distances; the employee is frequently required to walk on carpet, tile and concrete surfaces; the employee frequently climbs inclined surfaces composed of soil, gravel, and sand at construction sites and that requires the employee to maintain balance; the employee will occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 40 pounds. Specific abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
ENVIROMENT :
Employee will primarily work indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general office
environment, however, will be exposed to extreme weather conditions when conducting on-site field work or inspections for various engineering projects. Subject to safety hazards from working in and around traffic or excavation areas, noise, dust and pollen from construction sites, cramped spaces and poor lighting from underground structures, and possible exposure to disease when working around sanitary sewers, storm water sewers, Water Treatment Plant, and Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Disaster Service Workers :
Under California Government Code Sections 3100 - 3109, public employees are designated as disaster service workers. The term "public employees" includes all persons employed by the state or any county, city, state agency, or public district. Disaster service workers are required to participate in such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them by their employer or by law. The employees working for the City of Brawley take this responsibility seriously. Disaster plans are continuously being evaluated, drills are scheduled, and employees engage in training where they practice executing emergency support services.
