Description

The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future Community Services Worker vacancies.

  • Current vacancies are for year-round, 10-25 hours per week (hours may very depending on program) for Recreation Services - Day Camp, After School, Teen Programs, and Youth Sports.

DEFINITION

To assist in the delivery of a defined Community Services program; to assist in community events and / or services; perform related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry level part-time classification used for assignment to a variety of specialized programs such as human services, leisure services and cultural arts. Incumbents in this classification work under very close supervision in accordance with specific instructions and well-defined program procedures, and exercise limited independent judgment. Incumbents may be assigned year-round or seasonally. Upon successfully performing the full range of duties required of this classification, in addition to demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for advancement, and meeting the required minimum qualifications, the Community Services Director may appoint incumbents to the next level of Community Services Leader with Human Resources verification of qualifications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided by various part-time and full-time personnel.

No supervision is exercised.

Examples of Duties

General

Within established guidelines, assist in the delivery of a defined community services program or service.

Provide quality customer service and communication to internal and external customers.

Assist in the set-up, preparation and dismantling of facilities, rooms, fields, and courts as needed by assignment.

Assist in the delivery of community special events and / or services.

Assist and instruct program participants within program guidelines.

Perform a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and minor repair tasks as needed by assignment.

Perform related duties, as assigned.

Recreation Services (Day Camp, After School & Teen Programs, Kid Watch, Youth and Adult Sports)

In addition to the general functions listed, examples of essential job functions specific to these program areas include, but are not limited to, the following :

Assist in supervising, conducting, and instructing pre-school and school age children in recreational games, activities, and other programs.

Officiate and keep score in youth and adult sports programs.

Model kindness and respect, and teach fundamentals of organized activities, sports, and games.

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Phase One - Application Review : The first phase of the selection process shall be a detailed review and appraisal of each candidate's application. Those candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of education and experience, as submitted, may be invited to participate in the next phase of the selection process. No weight shall be assigned to this phase of the selection process.

Phase Two - Oral Appraisal Interview : Candidates who receive a minimum score of 70% on this phase shall have their name placed on the Eligibility List for Community Services Worker. Eligibility Lists are generally valid for one year. Once the list is established, the Community Services Department may conduct follow-up assessments.

Prospective candidates must successfully complete a thorough background review. Upon a contingent offer of employment, prospective candidates must successfully complete a medical examination and provide proof of legal work status. All new employees will be fingerprinted as a part of the employment process and a criminal history check will be conducted with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, in the event of a disaster, City employees are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.

The City of Brea offers a generous benefit package for eligible employees for the Part-time Employment and Benefits Policy members, including :

SALARY RANGE : Composed of seven (7) steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance.

RETIREMENT : In lieu of a social security contribution, all part-time regular and part-time intermittent employees that are not in the CalPERS retirement system must participate in the City's 457 deferred compensation program. The mandatory minimum contribution is seven and a half percent (7.5%).

HEALTH INSURANCE : Certain part-time employees may be eligible to participate in the Public Employees' Medical and Hospital Care Act (PEMHCA) Program for medical insurance. To be eligible, employees must meet CalPERS PEMHCA requirements (e.g., must work at least half-time and have a permanent appointment or a "limited term" appointment with a duration of more than six months.) Effective January 1, 2024, the City's contribution toward CalPERS health insurance premiums for these eligible and participating part-time employees shall be $157 per month.

GROUP INSURANCE PROGRAMS : Part-time regular employees may participate in the City's dental, vision, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for medical / dependent programs, short term disability, critical illness, cancer, accident or pet insurances.

BILINGUAL PAY : $0.58 per hour for eligible languages in addition to English.

HOLIDAYS : Part-time regular employees shall be paid four (4) hours for regularly scheduled work days any of the holidays listed in their employment and benefits policy.

GENERAL LEAVE : Part-time Regular / Intermittent employees may earn and / or accrue vacation and sick leave time based on their employment and benefits policy.
