Parks Maintenance Worker I

Summary

Maintains and repairs park athletic fields and facilities.

The starting pay rate for this position is $14.34 (pay grade 14).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Maintains and prepares parks and athletic fields for public use;
• Assists in the maintenance of athletic facilities, including park and city buildings, playgrounds, pools, fences, and irrigation system;
• Assists in the construction and maintenance of new and previous athletic fields;
• Operates and maintains equipment and park machinery, including mowers and trucks;
• Assists other park employees in various park maintenance tasks, including marking and painting fields, installing irrigation systems, and landscaping;
• Repairs and replaces vital facility sports equipment, including nets, batting cages, and wind screens; and
• Maintains and cleans park grounds on a weekend basis such as cleaning public restrooms and removing litter.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a non-supervisory position.

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

Standard office practices and procedures; and athletic field and facility maintenance practices and procedures.

Skill/Ability To

Safely and effectively operate and maintain heavy equipment; maintain turf and playability of athletic fields; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; understand and follow instructions; communicate effectively; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Class C Texas driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity, work with tools and equipment, drive vehicles or equipment, perform repetitive motions, perform work involving the entire body, stand, and walk and balance on all types of surfaces. The employee is required to bend from the waist, crouch or squat, kneel, sit, crawl, climb, twist, and reach with arms and hands. The employee is required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds, such as materials and equipment, and must carry, push, and pull materials. The employee must be able to see clearly, with or without vision correction, in close situations, at a distance, and peripherally, and be able to adjust focus.

The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The employee is exposed to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, chemicals, and bacteria. The employee is required to perform tedious, exacting work. The work environment is noisy and distracting.
