This position is responsible for performing a variety of service department jobs relating to construction, maintenance, repair and labor, as assigned by the Foreman, Assistant Foreman or Crew Chief. Jobs include general labor, landscaping, leaf collection, snowplowing and salting, and assisting on road/sewer crews or other needs of the service department.
Duties and Responsibilities

As assigned and depending upon seasonal needs, performs duties as follows:
- General labor, sweeping, raking, and shoveling;
- Landscape grooming, grass cutting, trimming tree limbs, spreading mulch, topsoil and grass seed;
- Leaf collection;
- Snow plowing and salting;
- Traffic control flagger;
- Assists on concrete, asphalt, and miscellaneous road crews such as crack seal, soil and seed, and asphalt repair, etc. as necessary;
- Assists on sewer crew as necessary;
- Performs related duties as assigned by management.
Working conditions
Work is typically performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions or while operating a vehicle. When working in outside weather conditions may be exposed to noise, extreme cold or heat, wet and or humid conditions, sun exposure, wind, fumes, dust and airborne particles. May be required to traverse uneven terrain, work near traffic flow, operate or work near large machinery and/or moving mechanical parts. May occasionally be exposed to risk of electric shock, vibrations and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Work schedule may include evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays, or being “on call” depending upon needs.
Qualifications
Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent. • 2 years of related experience with knowledge of equipment operation and/or concrete strongly preferred. • Current CDL license preferred, but temporary CDL and ability to obtain within 6 months considered. • Willingness to work evening or night shift as assigned, particularly in winter. • General availability to work under emergency situations beyond regularly scheduled hours of work and willingness to be “on call” during winter months. • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and to learn all service department tasks. • Must consider safety a priority, demonstrate knowledge of safety policies and take appropriate safety precautions in all work situations, including but not limited to: setting up a work zone safely, properly flagging traffic, and use of all equipment, tools and machinery. • Demonstrated basic knowledge of proper equipment, tool and machinery use, including correct temperatures for asphalt and tar buggy. • Demonstrated basic knowledge of: o Concrete, forming, grading and rebuilding catch basins, etc.; o Sanitary/storm sewer main and lateral repairs, operating the sewer snake and lateral camera, etc.; o Soil and seed restoration after concrete pours and sewer repairs, etc.; o How and when to use shoring for excavations; o Asphalt road repairs. • Ability to learn about materials, techniques and tools to use in the construction or repair of various service department jobs. • Ability to use basic math to calculate amounts of material needed for jobs and mixing proper amounts of material as needed. • Demonstrated communications skills and developing problem-solving skills.
Special Requirements
Physical Requirements Work can be physically demanding, requiring walking or standing for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, speak at an appropriate volume and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 80 pounds without assistance; may be required to move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle, including those requiring CDL, in all weather conditions. Must be able to safely and properly use hand tools and power tools, including air compressors, jack hammers, concrete cutting saw, plate compactors, etc.
