Under general supervision, resolves traffic signal operational problems and performs skilled maintenance duties involved in the inspection, modification, maintenance and/or repair of street signal systems, street lights, storm sirens and their associated components.
*This position performs duties deemed to be “safety-sensitive" and is therefore subjected to random drug testing under the City’s policies*
- Repairs, replaces, modifies, maintains, inspects and installs traffic signals, street lights, ballfield lights and storm siren equipment including signal heads, controllers, lights, circuitry, switches, fuses, timers and cabinet parts; maintains school flashers; consults with traffic engineering staff or factory representatives to test and diagnose electronic equipment and resolve technical problems.
- Investigates complaints and reports of malfunctions relating to traffic signal, street light or siren problems.
- Reconstructs and refurbishes traffic signal equipment or defective electrical equipment in the shop using appropriate tools and methods.
- Checks intersections for proper signal operations and operates specialized computer programs to make signal timing changes as directed; ensures that proper timing is restored after repairs are made.
- Installs or upgrades signal equipment including loops and vehicle detectors based on engineering drawings; installs, repairs, or modifies signals in compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Ensures electrical compatibility and safety of components; replaces defective equipment and other related electrical systems as necessary; tests electronic equipment including traffic signal heads, street lights, controllers, auxiliary equipment and other systems to ensure that they operate as intended; advises management if continued operation of equipment would present a problem or a hazard.
- Interprets complex electrical plans, specifications and schematics; ensures conformity with codes, regulations and safety requirements; reads electrical blueprints; maintains accurate maps and schematic drawings.
- Locates and marks underground utilities, cables, conduits and loop wires to prevent damage and to perform work.
- Inspects and tests equipment installed by contractors.
- Maintains accurate manual and computerized work records, logs and other documents; prepares work orders and helps maintain adequate inventory of materials and supplies; prepares work estimates; prepares a variety of reports.
- Performs traffic safety work including resetting and removing of temporary traffic control signage and delineation (cones, barricades, etc.) as required.
- Maintains tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner; cleans shop and equipment as necessary; follows proper safety procedures in a variety of hazardous environments including high voltage areas; maintains clean, safe service vehicles.
- Responds to after-hours emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
