Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Library Services, the Circulation Manager is responsible for managing and supervising the circulation activities at the Brookings Public Library.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school degree or equivalent required.
- 3 years of relevant experience.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must be able to work a variety of shifts to include days, evenings and weekends.
- Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity of the office and department.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher education, specifically a Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
- Knowledge and prior experience in library work or supervision desirable.
- Ability to operate various modern office equipment to include: computer and software, calculator, postage machine and photocopier.
Major Duties
Administrative
- Supervise the circulation of all library materials and equipment.
- Maintain efficient circulation procedures and records, and develop methods for improvement of services.
- Supervise the shelving of all books and library resources. Ensure that all books and resources in the library are shelved in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ensure that shelf reading throughout the collection is done on a continuous basis by assigning selections to be read and maintaining records of completed work.
- Organize desk projects for the circulation desk staff.
- Review records to compile list of overdue books and issue overdue notices to borrowers. Compile list of delinquent accounts for materials recovery service.
- Review newly created card accounts for accuracy.
- Resolve patron concerns, or escalate to management.
- Recruit and train volunteers and oversee volunteers’ schedule and workload.
Circulation
- Complete Library opening tasks including, but not limited to, maintaining the hold shelf, checking overdue and lost material status, pulling morning holds.
- Educate library patrons on use of all library services to include the instructions on how to use the online catalog, and Internet; how to locate library materials; how to use library equipment.
- Provide research assistance to patrons, using print and electronic resources.
- Inspect returned materials for damage, check-in, and shelve on shelving cart correctly.
- Locate materials for patrons.
- Issue library cards according to established procedures.
- Check out materials to patrons.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Supervise the part-time circulation assistants.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include assisting in the interviewing, hiring, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must regularly lift, push, pull and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
