Position Summary

The Liquor Store Manager is responsible for the supervision of the operation of the liquor stores in a manner which results in good customer service, sound business practices, financial success, and the controlled legal sale of alcohol and THC products in the community. Responsible for operational duties and supervision of personnel. Maintains daily operations for the liquor store. Reports to the Liquor Operation Manager.

This position is full-time, exempt position under FLSA. The hours will vary based on business needs to include days, evenings, weekends and some holidays.

Examples of Duties

Supervision

  • Performs all record keeping, bookkeeping, reporting, banking and accounting procedures necessary for efficient operation of the store; performs cash register and stocking duties.
  • Available to help at other stores when needed and available to work a schedule that includes a variety of days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ensure that each customer receives outstanding service by providing a friendly environment.
  • Responsible for staff working at assigned store.
  • Responsible for scheduling for store location, ensuring that the location remains within budgeted allocations.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection and development of staff, including training, conducting performance reviews of Full-time and Part-time store personnel.
  • Ensures that BAT Server Training and safety training is completed within the first 14 days of employment and on a yearly basis thereafter. Documentation must be forwarded to employee records.
  • Manage aspects of liquor, beer, wine or THC category assigned by Liquor Operations Manager.
  • Handles purchasing liquor, beer, wine and THC category as assigned.
  • Directly responsible for the daily operation of a store, its inventory and expenditures.
  • Supervises and assists in maintaining an adequate supply of merchandise in the cooler and on the shelves.
  • Review maintenance issues at store location, seek feasible repairs or communicate issues with the Liquor Operations Manager.
  • Performs selected duties of Liquor Operation Manager in his/her absence.
  • Inspect deliveries to ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for completion of perpetual inventory counts at store location, reviewing any discrepancies with the Liquor operations Manager.
  • Make decisions involving the public (customers, minors, inebriates, complaints, etc.) in accordance with established policies.
  • Enforces strict compliance of all laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A.A. Degree or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a retail setting of which 2 years of this experience should show increasingly responsible management of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with the principles, techniques, and equipment used in retail operations.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ability to speak, read or write any language other than English, including sign language.
  • Municipal Liquor store experience (1-2 years).
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record for the past 3 years.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • De-escalation skills.
  • Experience in coaching and training.
  • Experience with recruitment of employees.

Supplemental Information

Communications: Must be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives, and follow such directives. Must have ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures. Must have the ability to communicate in emergency situations and to report problems to supervisor, proper agency or authority. Must have understanding of personnel policies and ability to relate these to staff in an effective manner.

Decision Making: Must be able to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment. Must be able to assess problems and situations, anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives. Must have knowledge of administrative processes as it directly relates to City operations.

Interpersonal Relationships: Must be able to work in cooperation with other staff members. Must be consistent in dealing with people; must be sensitive to others problems and concerns without direct involvement, must exclude personal biases from work performance; must have the ability to accept criticism and/or discipline; must have tact and diplomacy. Must be able to establish and maintain effective supervisory relationships with other employees and positive public service relationships with members of the general public. Must be able to effectively supervise staff in division. Must be people-oriented with leadership skills.

Professional Attitude: Must have commitment to the organization; willingness to take initiative; dependability; maturity in relationships with others; and self-confidence. Must represent the organization to other agencies and citizens with a courteous, helpful, and accurate business-like attitude. Must have ability to establish and maintain an effective and respected working relationship with department heads, elected officials, staff and other agencies. Must have the ability to work as a team member.

Quality of Work: Must be able to produce quality, accurate work, detect and correct errors; utilize work time properly and productively.

Technical Knowledge: Must have knowledge of retail store (policies, procedures and practices). Must have working knowledge of business math. Must have the ability to read, understand, and interpret financial reports and statements. Must have knowledge of merchandising and marketing techniques. Must have basic computer skills.

Physical Abilities: Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same work-station for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame. Must be able to frequently lift up to 55 pounds.
